Welcome to Week 14 and the Week 14 Quarterback Rankings!
It’s not a great week for QB plays, with a lot of guys in tough matchups and with Brees and Big Ben in road matchups. This is probably good news for those folks who have an average quarterback. I’m pretty comfortable starting anybody in the top 20 on my board this week. I’m sure I’ll be making some significant adjustments when I update this weekend as my Week 14 research is still less than 50 percent finished.
I’m already liking Mahomes in DFS this week with nods to Aaron Rodgers, Baker Mayfield and DeShaun Watson. Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott have clear GPP applications as does Josh Allen. I’ll have more when I do the DFS podcast this weekend. Most likely on Saturday as I am on schedule with all my stuff this week.
I’ll be back in a bit with the wide receivers, running backs and tight ends.
These rankings will be updated on Saturday.
Week 14 Rankings
|Patrick Mahomes||KC||7.000||BAL@KC 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Tough matchup but he’s at home and he should get plenty fo chances here. Looks like another strong week for Kelce. The Ravens are most vulnerable in the middle of the field.
|Aaron Rodgers||GB||6.000||ATL@GB 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Home game and the first without Mike McCarthy. I’m not big on narrative-based-analysis, but is there any way Rodgers allows them to not score points in this game? Solid matchup too.
|Philip Rivers||LAC||6.500||CIN@LAC 12/09/2018 04:05PM ET||No Melvin Gordon so some extra pass volume is possible, and the matchup is super choice. The Bengals may be bad enough where it’s just a good day and not a great one (they can go to the run early), but I don’t see how Rivers fails here.
|Ben Roethlisberger||PIT||6.800||PIT@OAK 12/09/2018 04:25PM ET||Yeah, it’s Big Ben on the road, but you could not ask for a better matchup. Having no go-to multi back could mean more throw volume. My guess is that they keep Jaylen Samuels in for more snaps (versus Stevan Ridley) and throw more with him in there.
|Drew Brees||NO||6.600||NO@TB 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||The wet conditions COULD make this game less appealing but he’s a great play based on the matchup.
|Cam Newton||CAR||6.300||CAR@CLE 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Cam’s a little beat up with a sore shoulder but this is a huge game for the Panthers (6-6), who would miss the playoffs if the season ended today.
|Deshaun Watson||HOU||5.900||IND@HOU 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Solid home matchup. Fire DeShaun up!
|Andrew Luck||IND||5.900||IND@HOU 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||It’s a throw-to-win matchup, so expect a bounce-back from Luck. ***UPDATE*** TY Hilton’s looking good to play through his shoulder injury. I’ve bumped Luck up a few spots. He’s a viable play now on DK.
|Russell Wilson||SEA||6.100||MIN@SEA 12/10/2018 08:15PM ET||Tough matchup but at home and you really can’t run-to-win when you play the Vikings. Passing on them is no picnic either, but it’s your best bet. Look for Russ to use his wheels in this game—because he tends to do that in big games when the team needs it. Wilson has only a single game on the season with fewer than 2 passing scores. Even with his low pass volume, he has a floor.
|Jameis Winston||TB||6.200||NO@TB 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Tough matchup so some risk that the pass volume may not be enough. Still a good bet to have a solid day.
|Jared Goff||LAR||5.800||LAR@CHI 12/09/2018 08:20PM ET||I think the Rams matchup well against the Bears because they can stress them in a lot of ways. I think they get the tight ends involved this week along with Josh Reynolds.
|Baker Mayfield||CLE||5.800||CAR@CLE 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Solid home matchup that fits Mayfield pretty well. He’s willing to take what’s there. Jarvis Landry’s been a huge letdown, but he’s a sneaky player in this matchup.
|Matt Ryan||ATL||5.600||ATL@GB 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||I’m assuming that Julio Jones will play. Without Julio, Ryan plummets. Will update on Saturday.
|Lamar Jackson||BAL||5.700||BAL@KC 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||He could do really well here if the game goes high-scoring as I would expect. The Chiefs play good D at home and the Ravens are obviously capable defensively, so lower than expected output is certainly possible. We haven’t seen anything close to his ceiling yet.
|Dak Prescott||DAL||5.600||PHI@DAL 12/09/2018 04:25PM ET||A solid play now that he’s using his feet more and has a legit outside weapon plus an ascending one in Gallup. But what’s maybe even more important is that they have a set lineup now. Playing six receivers heavy reps was awful for the young QB.
|Tom Brady||NE||5.800||NE@MIA 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||This one is tough. I’ve ignored Pats @ Miami history in the past and I’ve been burned many times. I like the matchup here and feel like they should do well, but history does hint at ugliness on Sunday. It’s also quite possible that they just unleash Sony Michel in this game.
|Kirk Cousins||MIN||5.600||MIN@SEA 12/10/2018 08:15PM ET||His receivers are not healthy right now. Healthy enough to play but both guys are banged up. They need to use Cook more as a receiver and they need to use Rudolph more to take some pressure off of Thielen and Diggs. If they do that, Cousins could do well here.
|Carson Wentz||PHI||5.400||PHI@DAL 12/09/2018 04:25PM ET||He’s scuffling just a bit and it makes sense as he’s coming off a major injury. He’s not quite the downhill passer he was in 2017, but it’s close. This offense could take off at any point. I envision a pass-heavy approach this week, with emphasis on the short game. Wentz will use all of his weapons but he’ll use Ertz the most as always.
|Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||5.600||LAR@CHI 12/09/2018 08:20PM ET||Some risk of getting knocked out as he’s a guy who runs. If they choose to protect him, then you lose some foot-points, which is what’s made him a QB1. He’s risky this week.
|Josh Allen||BUF||5.500||NYJ@BUF 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Plenty of ceiling but he’s also a house of cards. Good if you need a big score but bad if you only need some floor. He’s capable of 7 point days and 35 point days in equal measure.
|Matthew Stafford||DET||5.200||DET@ARI 12/09/2018 04:25PM ET||They can use Patrick Peterson to take away his only weapon. None for me, thanks.
|Ryan Tannehill||MIA||4.800||NE@MIA 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Has some wildcard appeal, but low upside unless they get some freak plays.
|Nick Mullens||SF||4.600||DEN@SF 12/09/2018 04:05PM ET||I’d have to be desperate.
|Case Keenum||DEN||5.200||DEN@SF 12/09/2018 04:05PM ET||Manny Sanders is gone, so no way I would trust my Week 14 to Case Keenum. Has some appeal due to the matchup but expect a run-heavy Denver offense.
|Eli Manning||NYG||5.100||NYG@WAS 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Tough matchup. This looks like and ugly game. Now he has lost OBJ for the week. Eli is not playayble outside of desperate circumstances.
|Derek Carr||OAK||5.000||PIT@OAK 12/09/2018 04:25PM ET||Dude’s throwing to Jordy Nelson. Hard pass.
|Josh Rosen||ARI||4.700||DET@ARI 12/09/2018 04:25PM ET||He lost Christian Kirk and they are throwing less anyway.
|Mark Sanchez||WAS||4.000||NYG@WAS 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Not a good idea. This team is in a death spiral.
|Sam Darnold||NYJ||4.400||NYJ@BUF 12/09/2018 01:00PM ET||Not enough healthy weapons to compete here in fantasy terms. The Bills D is the better bet here.
|Jeff Driskel||CIN||4.400||CIN@LAC 12/09/2018 04:05PM ET||Tough matchup and he has lost too many big weapons. Break glass only if necessary.
|Marcus Mariota||TEN||4.900||JAX@TEN 12/06/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED Both teams will take the air out of this game. Running and short passes with lots of clock running. It’s a dangerous spot as he could play well and underperform for fantasy.
|Cody Kessler||JAX||4.400||JAX@TEN 12/06/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED The only team that may throw less than these two teams in Baltimore.
