Welcome to the Week 15 Quarterback Rankings!
I really dug down and got into the Week 15 QBs, and I’m far from done. I know it’s a big week and some of the more debatable lineup choices will probably be QB-related. Expect some movement when the final ranks go up on Saturday.
Tonight’s game is not a big deal as Lamar Jackson is an easy call to play while Sam Darnold should be avoided unless you’re in a bit of a bind. Watson and Brees are duking out for the number one position once I pull Jackson down into the “ALREADY PLAYED” column in the updated version. Right now, I’m giving the nod to Watson because I like his ceiling more due to the matchup dynamics.
For DFS purposes, I’m sort fo all over he place as there’s suddenly a lot to like after a few weeks of slim pickings. Eli Manning is my current choice if I decide to pay down and I love Brees’ floor and Watson’s ceiling. This week’s DFS pod’s going to be interesting for sure.
This article will be updated on Saturday as always.
I’ll be back later with the wide receivers, running backs and tight ends.
WEEK 15 RANKINGS
All pricing was sourced from DraftKings.
|Deshaun Watson||HOU||6.800||HOU@TEN 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||This is suddenly a great divisional matchup because the Titans re playing more aggressively these days and as crazy as it sounds, it’s the first of two meetings between these teams as they again Week 17. We like first meetings better than second ones. It’s a mild plus rather than a big deal, but worth noting. Will Fuller’s expected (still limited in practice) will help if it comes to fruition—the Titans are a M.A.S.H. unit the secondary so all of the top 3 Texans WRs are good plays. If Fullers sits, Keke Coutee becomes flexworthy.
|Drew Brees||NO||6.900||IND@NO 12/16/2019 08:15PM ET||Great matchup as the Colts defend to keep the play in front of them and Brees will execute that all day long. Fire up yer Saints!
|Patrick Mahomes||KC||7.100||DEN@KC 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He played through the hand injury last week and it’s minor so no worries there. Pay no attention to the questionable tag. Mahomes is a baller and they need the wins. Yeah, his numbers are down, but I’d be happy to start him this week in a semifinal tilt. The Broncos don’t have much of a pass rush at the moment.
|Ryan Tannehill||TEN||6.500||HOU@TEN 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||The man is on fire right now and he’s facing a defense that was recently neutered by Drew Lock. So play Tannehill if you need him. The pace has quickened a bit for the Titans who are starting to embrace having a truly balanced offense. This game has potential as a game in DFS and that’s good news for Tannehill in all formats for Week 15.
|Jameis Winston||TB||6.900||TB@DET 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Detroit is a soft matchup but we have problems as Mike Evans now out of the picture. This gives teams more ways to attack defensively. Jameis also has a thumb injury. He’s a great play in terms of the matchup BUT not what he was when Evans was in town.
|Russell Wilson||SEA||7.000||SEA@CAR 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Much better matchup this week but it’s also a run-to-win spot with the way the Panthers are being toasted on the ground. Some concern that it could be a monster day for Chris Carson. Still, even with that, Wilson should improve considerably on Week 14.
|Dak Prescott||DAL||6.300||LAR@DAL 12/15/2019 04:25PM ET||Dak’s thrown 98 passes over the last two week, so we know the volume should be there—even in tough matchups. Heck, maybe more in tough matchups.
|Jimmy Garoppolo||SF||6.100||ATL@SF 12/15/2019 04:25PM ET||I’ll use him but this team can go to the run when they get ahead and I see them as being ahead in this one. So you have to hope they don’t get all the early scores on the ground. He’s got a good shot at a strong day but some floor worries.
|Tom Brady||NE||6.000||NE@CIN 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Good matchup and he’s probably seething right now. “It’s on to Cincinnati” and you can throw the ball on them. The Patriots need to throw the ball—even if they get a lead, they have work to do in the pass game. I’m not worried about game flow here. The Patriots will pile on. They don’t give any f___s.
|Aaron Rodgers||GB||6.300||CHI@GB 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||It’s a tough matchup for sure and there’s really no clear way to attack the Bears. You do need to run some with Akiem Hicks still out, but they can still stop the run. This feels like a moderate output week for Rodgers who needs to be pushed in this new scheme to achieve the pass volume we need. Mitch Trubisky is a 50/50 bet to push that volume. Sadly, he’s also a pass volume worm hoe if he has a bad day.
|Baker Mayfield||CLE||6.400||CLE@ARI 12/15/2019 04:05PM ET||The matchup is certainly a good one—the best one by the numbers and the Cardinals do us a huge favor by playing fast and tiring out their bad defense. This is a spot to use Mayfield if you are in need a play. I’m using him in DK to some extent.
|Jared Goff||LAR||6.100||LAR@DAL 12/15/2019 04:25PM ET||Goff was in control last week but the game is AT Dallas and Goff is better at home than on the road. He’s playable but not as strong a play as last week. Look for Kupp to play his usual role this week with a soft slot matchup.
|Kyler Murray||ARI||5.600||CLE@ARI 12/15/2019 04:05PM ET||The tough matchups and the hamstring injury have conspired to lower output for Kyler, but this feels like a potential get-well spot if you need him. He should be a step faster with the hammy healing and this matchup is far easier than what he’s seen over the last two weeks.
|Kirk Cousins||MIN||6.000||MIN@LAC 12/15/2019 04:05PM ET||These two teams love to run and both head coaches bring running mindsets. I expect a lot of running clock here and I do not want to bet on offense on the whole. Cousins is playing well so he’s viable but not a guy I want to play this week, to be honest. Obviously, game flow projections are exactly what they say they are and they can get us in trouble. Look at last week’s Saints/49ers game. This game could take on a life of its own like that one did, and both of these quarterbacks can get hot. So play Cousins if he is your guy, just understand that pace of play looks like a concern here.
|Eli Manning||NYG||5.200||MIA@NYG 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He’s VERY playable here as long as the Giants don’t do something silly like putting Daniel Jones back in there early after a high-ankle sprain. We’d love to play a healthy Jones in this spot, surely, but if it’s an injured Jones or a healthy Manning, we’ll take Eli, who probably helps the receivers though some will bristle at the notion.
|Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||6.000||CHI@GB 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Riskier than I’m looking for, no doubt, but his recent plus play combined with more rushing usage gives us some floor, and we know Trubisky has ceiling.
|Carson Wentz||PHI||6.200||PHI@WAS 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Ugh. He has no weapons but the matchup is good and he was able to get by last week with the same lack of weapons. I has him as a QB1 last week but he’s a QB2 here.
|Matt Ryan||ATL||5.900||ATL@SF 12/15/2019 04:25PM ET||Not looking to use him in this tough road spot without Calvin Ridley. He’s playable and you never know, but I’m looking for better.
|Ryan Fitzpatrick||MIA||6.200||MIA@NYG 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Very good matchup but he’s lost some receivers and unless he gets DeVante Parker (concussion) back fast, he gets downgraded despite the strong matchup.
|Philip Rivers||LAC||5.600||MIN@LAC 12/15/2019 04:05PM ET||I do not like the way this game sets up and I explain thoroughly in Kirk Cousins’ skinny. Rivers is always capable of a big day via efficiency so he’s a playable asset if you need him, but expectations are below his season averages.
|Jacoby Brissett||IND||5.900||IND@NO 12/16/2019 08:15PM ET||Tough road matchup and he just keeps losing weapons. Parris Campbell is now in IR and with TY Hilton still likely a week away, the cupboard is barren. He’s a volume-based play based on a projected game script that would have him throwing while playing catch-up, but that’s not enough for me this week.
|Josh Allen||BUF||6.000||BUF@PIT 12/15/2019 08:20PM ET||Tough road matchup after failing in a tough Week 14 matchup. I’m fading him here as they will have trouble running the ball as well. He always has upside and he’s certainly playable but this game feels like a mega ugly defensive slugfest.
|Derek Carr||OAK||5.600||JAX@OAK 12/15/2019 04:05PM ET||Playable due to the plus matchup but Carr rarely exhibits the kind of ceiling we’re looking for in fantasy so hopefully you have a better option.
|Drew Lock||DEN||5.700||DEN@KC 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He's been impressive over two starts and if I told you I saw last week coming, I’d be lying. He’s playable here in 2QB formats but to use him as your only QB in a single league would require some guts—probably more than I have.
|Kyle Allen||CAR||5.400||SEA@CAR 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He could get pulled. Ruminate on that before you lock him in. If Will Grier had a good preseason, he’d already be in there. He’s going to get a look soon because they NEED to assess him on some level, with a big offseason coming up. The matchup gives him a chance but none for me, thanks.
|Gardner Minshew II||JAX||5.500||JAX@OAK 12/15/2019 04:05PM ET||With Chark dinged, you really don’t want to get involved with this passing game.
|David Blough||DET||5.300||TB@DET 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Do not play Blough. Play Golladay in DFS, but that’s all I’m doing with the Lions this week.
|Devlin Hodges||PIT||5.200||BUF@PIT 12/15/2019 08:20PM ET||Not in this matchup. They throw as little as possible which is obviously bad for our needs.
|Andy Dalton||CIN||4.900||NE@CIN 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||None for me, thanks.
|Dwayne Haskins Jr.||WAS||4.600||PHI@WAS 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He's not startable though he’s making progress.
|Daniel Jones||NYG||5.600||MIA@NYG 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Practicing but not fully. Manning is expected to start. (OUT)
|Matthew Stafford||DET||5.800||TB@DET 12/15/2019 01:00PM ET||An outside chance to return this year but no signs that it would be this week. (OUT)
|Lamar Jackson||BAL||7.500||NYJ@BAL 12/12/2019 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) It’s a freaking quad and he’s been practicing on it. I’m more concerned about the game script than the injury here. If the Jets go completely flat, and they could, we’ll have to hope Jackson is his usual impactful self early on, because we could see RGIII by the end of the third quarter. I expect LJ to play for as long as this game is in doubt. Don’t forget how big this win is. The Ravens are looking at home field throughout if they can close strong.
|Sam Darnold||NYJ||5.300||NYJ@BAL 12/12/2019 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) He’s certainly playable and I know I’ve been advocating for Darnold recently, but that soft stretch of games is now over. The Jets are pumpkins once again. I suggest you treat them as such. Darnold makes a nice play as the backend in a 2QB lineup and he’s playable if you need him, but with all things equal, he’d be on my bench.
