Welcome to the Week 2 QB rankings. There are no big themes this week. No devastating injuries unless you were tethered to Sam Darnold in a Superflex league like me. Nick Foles has also been replaced by Gardner Minshew, but again, not many of us were leaning on Foles.
I’m pretty comfortable with the top 20 QB options though things get a little dicey after that.
I’m still getting my footing with Week 2 DFS, though Lamar, Mahomes, Allen and Wentz all have my early attention. We’ll see where I land later in the week.
As always, my weekly rankings get finalized on Saturday, so look at the update before finalizing your lineups.
I’ll be back in a bit with the RBs, WRs and TEs.
There will be a DFS pod on Saturday and a WEEI podcast tomorrow. Giddyup!
WEEK 2 RANKINGS
|Patrick Mahomes||KC||7.500||KC@OAK 09/15/2019 04:05PM ET||The odds on him playing 60 minutes and posting bad numbers is way thin. Roll with Mahomes. He’s worth exposure in tournaments this week—even with the high cost. The stacking options are where the headache comes in. Kelce is a great play and so is Watkins. Damien William in GPPs looks sharp and MeCole Hardman is certainly an aim high play with merit.
|Lamar Jackson||BAL||6.700||ARI@BAL 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Another good matchup—this time in front of their fans. Bombs away! And, if game flow is your worry, remember that RGIII finished last week for the Ravens. Lamar’s game was about 3 quarters. My stacking choice would be Mark Andrews but right now. my LJ team is in my cash lineup.
|Deshaun Watson||HOU||6.600||JAX@HOU 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He’s got healthy weapons and improved protection. He’s looking good—even in this tough matchup.
|Carson Wentz||PHI||6.400||PHI@ATL 09/15/2019 08:20PM ET||The Falcons can do some things defensively but unless they find a way to get some pressure, I think the Eagles find the underbelly easily enough. Look for the tight ends to get more involved more in this one. A big game feels possible here.
|Dak Prescott||DAL||6.300||DAL@WAS 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He’s looking very, very good in the new scheme and so are the receivers. Zeke could always hog all the scores, but barring that, this looks like a super tasty matchup. The only concern is that these divisional games can sometimes take on a life of their own.
|Tom Brady||NE||6.400||NE@MIA 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||A Sony Michel 3 TD day is always a possibility but Brady should crush here and I don’t see them holding back on their divisional rival. They’ll score 40 before we any signs of mercy.
|Ben Roethlisberger||PIT||5.800||SEA@PIT 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Ben should rebound at home versus a somewhat soft secondary. Stack with JuJu. Adding either McDonald or Moncrief makes sense based on last week’s data and this matchup. The bigger the field you are playing in, the more I am looking at Moncrief, who is a leap of faith after how poorly he played last week. The thing is, he should get some straight deep looks in this game and a lot of people will be running away from him. This is for the risk-takers.
|Russell Wilson||SEA||6.200||SEA@PIT 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Good set up for Russ here in terms of fantasy juice. He’ll run more in games like this and they will need points so the pass attempts should be there. Stacking with Lockett makes sense. As a few “sharps” including Evan Silva have pointed out this week, the Steelets have a habit of putting LB and SSs on slot receivers. Lockett could toast them if that’s the case.
|Drew Brees||NO||6.200||NO@LAR 09/15/2019 04:25PM ET||He should be able to ride Kamara to a pretty good week and this offense has more balance with the addition of Jared Cook and the emergence of Tre’Quan Smith. Cook could be a bigger factor in this one.
|Josh Allen||BUF||5.300||BUF@NYG 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Was shaky last week but the fantasy numbers were pretty good. Now gets the Giants on the same field he beat the Jets on last week. This game could be ugly and Allen can really eat when things get chaotic. I will 100% have a few tourney stacks with Allen plus Smokey Brown and Cole Beasley. It’s cheap and you get some locked in volume in a good matchup for both receivers.
|Jared Goff||LAR||5.900||NO@LAR 09/15/2019 04:25PM ET||Tough matchup but you can’t beat the Saints with ground and pound. I expect the Rams to push pace while the Saints try to shorten the game in the first half. Goff posts better passing numbers in home games. I’d be stacking with Kupp and maybe add Cooks on top if your feeling saucy.
|Aaron Rodgers||GB||6.500||MIN@GB 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||He’ll keep getting better in the new offense and while this matchup is tough, it’s not like being at Chicago.
|Matt Ryan||ATL||6.100||PHI@ATL 09/15/2019 08:20PM ET||They have to be in throw mode pretty much all day if they plan on winning. The Ryan/Julio stack is looking very good if you play a GPP that includes the Sunday night game.
|Baker Mayfield||CLE||6.000||CLE@NYJ 09/16/2019 08:15PM ET||He’s going to carve the Jets up but so is Chubb and the game script will eventually favor the RBs. Look for a good solid day.
|Andy Dalton||CIN||5.400||SF@CIN 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Looked good on the road last week and I’ll bump him up a few at home in Week 2, though SF looked reasonably good defensively last week. They are rocking the Rams scheme in Cincy and the early returns looked pretty good. Dalton stacked with either Ross, Tyler Boyd or both makes some sense.
|Philip Rivers||LAC||6.100||LAC@DET 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Two teams that play slow and Rivers is without a lot of weapons right now.
|Derek Carr||OAK||5.100||KC@OAK 09/15/2019 04:05PM ET||Solid matchup. He’s playable here despite the meager weaponry. They HAVE to throw in this game.
|Kyler Murray||ARI||5.400||ARI@BAL 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Can’t wait to watch, but this is not a game to start him in. Too much talent on the other side and not enough help in the Arizona trenches. I see great things for Murray, just not this week. On the other hand, maybe the injuries in the Ravens secondary (Jimmy Smith is out) could give us a thin window in bigger GPPs. Stack Murray with Kirk or Fitz and throw in DJ because if Kyler goes off, he likely will too. This is definitely for the risk-takers.
|Jimmy Garoppolo||SF||6.000||SF@CIN 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Though he actually looked ok. Give Jimmy some patience as this team comes together and he gains confidence in his knee. Cincy’s got a tough pass rush, so we may see some run-heavy drives in this one.
|Case Keenum||WAS||5.000||DAL@WAS 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Tough matchup though he could have to throw a lot. There’s potential here if you’re desperate.
|Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||5.500||CHI@DEN 09/15/2019 04:25PM ET||Look for better results this week though they still have some missing or not fully healthy parts. Trubisky is what he is and that’s often plenty good enough for fantasy purposes. The thing that gives me pause here is that he’s going to be facing Vic Fangio (his old DC) and that could prove to be problematic. Fangio may be able to use his deep profile to flummox the young passer.
|Jacoby Brissett||IND||5.000||IND@TEN 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Both teams want to play slow. He’s Superflex viable but not 1QB-league desirable.
|Matthew Stafford||DET||5.200||LAC@DET 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Tougher matchup this week and both teams play slow.
|Kirk Cousins||MIN||5.300||MIN@GB 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Should be better than last week but unless GB pushes them by scoring heavy early, Minny will seemingly try to shorten the game and take the air out with running and clock sucking.
|Marcus Mariota||TEN||5.000||IND@TEN 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Two teams that want to shorten the game and the Colts force short passes. MM could play well and still suck for fantasy.
|Gardner Minshew II||JAX||4.800||JAX@HOU 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Looked great but let’s see what happens when a NFL team is prepped for him. I’m looking forward to watching this game.
|Eli Manning||NYG||4.900||BUF@NYG 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Buffalo looked very good defensively last week.
|Joe Flacco||DEN||4.900||CHI@DEN 09/15/2019 04:25PM ET||Nothing I want to get involved with here.
|Ryan Fitzpatrick||MIA||4.700||NE@MIA 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||Start the Pats D.
|Trevor Siemian||NYJ||4.000||CLE@NYJ 09/16/2019 08:15PM ET||Nope. No way. Start the Browns D.
|Sam Darnold||NYJ||4.900||CLE@NYJ 09/16/2019 08:15PM ET||Out with Mono. One more way that the Jets manage to look like a high school operation—even when it’s not their fault.
|Nick Foles||JAX||5.100||JAX@HOU 09/15/2019 01:00PM ET||IR (clavicle)
|Cam Newton||CAR||6.300||TB@CAR 09/12/2019 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) He should have time to throw here and he’s got fabulous weapons at his disposal. Being home on the short week is a plus.
|Jameis Winston||TB||5.900||TB@CAR 09/12/2019 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Tough matchup on a short week but the pass volume ought to be there, so he’s a viable play if you need him. Hopefully you have a better plan B.
