Welcome to the Week 3 Quarterback Rankings!
Finding a starter is no problem this week for the streamers. The passers are playable pretty deep into the player pool. In fact, it’s only the bottom three options that really make me want to lose my lunch. As far as options I really like a lot, we are talking about the top eleven or twelve—the QB1s.
The only injuries worth getting into are Marcus Mariota and Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers (knee) is a very good bet to play while Mariota (hand/nerve) looks like a game time decision, not to mention a really bad play versus the Jaguars.
I’ll be back later on with the RBs, WRs and TEs.
These rankings will be updated on Saturday.
Week 3 Rankings:
|Rank||Name||Team||Salary||Game Info||The Skinny|
|Patrick Mahomes||KC||7.000||SF@KC 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||No reason to back off here as the 49ers line up well to attack with the pass. Don’t expect last week’s stats, obviously, but this kid is for real and the weapons are simply off the charts. As I have said all along, there will be picks and some errors of aggression, but the yards and touchdowns should be there on most weeks, and this is a good matchup.
|Tom Brady||NE||6.900||NE@DET 09/23/2018 08:20PM ET||If Gordon plays, Brady’s really a tremendous option, because Flash doesn’t need to make the plays himself to have a big impact on this offense. If Gordon sits or is on a pitch count, Brady is still a very good option in this matchup. The Lions have been a bit of a pushover so far and they may not have Darius Slay this week.
|Aaron Rodgers||GB||7.100||GB@WAS 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s probable to play despite no practice so far. The matchup is good and he’s still a valuable fantasy option without his mobility. Just make sure he’s active. You never know.
|Deshaun Watson||HOU||6.100||NYG@HOU 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s taking too many hits due to bad protection and because he holds onto the ball like a young Roethlisberger—all but inviting contact. He’s a remarkable athlete and he can do good things this way, but he’s coming off of a major injury and I can’t help but be a little concerned.
|Cam Newton||CAR||6.000||CIN@CAR 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||I like Cam a lot in games versus the AFC. I think it increases the odds of a rushing TD because they are not used to seeing anything like him in the red zone. I like him in GPPs this week. The monster game is always out there with Cam, and it could certainly happen at home vs. Cincy.
|Jimmy Garoppolo||SF||6.500||SF@KC 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||He will need to keep up with Mahomes—assuming KC stays hot. KC’s pass rush is nothing scary, so Jimmy has a shot to go off.
|Kirk Cousins||MIN||6.800||BUF@MIN 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Definitely some concern that this could be over in the first quarter. I could see Trevor Siemian playing some in this game—mostly handing it off to Lat Murray. Cousins should have a nice day before leaving. Just pray for no early defensive touchdowns by the Vikes’ D.
|Drew Brees||NO||6.400||NO@ATL 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Brees has good and bad games against the Falcons, who match up well with his receivers. This feels like a big game for Kamara, which is ok for Brees for sure, but a windfall TD game seems a bit far fetched. QB1 this week but not elite.
|Ryan Fitzpatrick||TB||6.000||PIT@TB 09/24/2018 08:15PM ET||He's going to turn into a pumpkin eventually, I think, but I’m inclined to stick with him here unless you have another really strong alternative.
|Carson Wentz||PHI||6.200||IND@PHI 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s baaaaaack. Probably not going to run much if at all, but will be a huge positive step for this offense. All the throws are back in play and the sheme will be opened up like it ought to be. They have enough weapons-even with all the injuries. Look for a lot of 2TE with Goedert playing a significant red zone role.
|Matthew Stafford||DET||5.900||NE@DET 09/23/2018 08:20PM ET||The Pats have been beatable and lack the manpower to cover all of the Lions weapons. Moreover, this is not a team where you just take away a weapon. They have three very good receivers and a deep ground attack plus Riddick to attack their linebackers. This game has a chance to be high-scoring.
|Matt Ryan||ATL||5.700||NO@ATL 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||I like what this offense looks like with Ridley as the number two receiver, though sanu is still outsnapping him. That really shouldn’t last much longer. Sanu is not even close to Ridley, as far as talent goes. That transition is the key to Ryan being a more consistent force in my view. He’ll need to throw for four quarters in this one, with no Freeman. Feeling good about his chances.
|Russell Wilson||SEA||6.000||DAL@SEA 09/23/2018 04:25PM ET||He should be better this week without Mack and company chasing him around.
|Ben Roethlisberger||PIT||6.300||PIT@TB 09/24/2018 08:15PM ET||Solid play but he’s always dicey on the road. It doesn’t really make sense, but it’s hard to deny at this stage.
|Andrew Luck||IND||5.600||IND@PHI 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Tough matchup but he should be able to attack their corners IF he can just get a modicum of pass protection.
|Philip Rivers||LAC||5.800||LAC@LAR 09/23/2018 04:05PM ET||Tough as hell matchup.
|Jared Goff||LAR||5.900||LAC@LAR 09/23/2018 04:05PM ET||Tough matchup but no Bosa, so that helps. Should be a lot of Gurley this week.
|Blake Bortles||JAX||5.600||TEN@JAX 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||With banged up backs, he should pass a bit more. Looked very good last week.
|Alex Smith||WAS||5.800||GB@WAS 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Viable, sure, but this offense is limited to dinking and dunking for the most part and I’m not in love with that approach against the fast GB back seven.
|Andy Dalton||CIN||5.700||CIN@CAR 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Not loving him in this matchup but he’s viable because of his weapons. No Mixon hurts a little and the Panthers are conservative with their safeties to the extent they can be. No Mixon helps them there.
|Joe Flacco||BAL||5.400||DEN@BAL 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Tough matchup, but he’s playing fairly well and John Brown is healthy. Use him if you have a need.
|Ryan Tannehill||MIA||5.300||OAK@MIA 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s playing better than I expected and this is a solid home matchup.
|Eli Manning||NYG||5.200||NYG@HOU 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||So bad so far, but just a slight uptick in pass protection could go a long way. Sadly, my concerns about the new coaching staff are still very much alive.
|Dak Prescott||DAL||5.100||DAL@SEA 09/23/2018 04:25PM ET||Always viable because he can score points with his feet as well as with his arm, but the receivers around him are a complete **** show. Never seen anything quite like it—with not one established weapon. Dallas should be ashamed of what they are sporting at WR and TE. This is a sign of front office dysfunction. It will get better over time as guys play themselves in and out of the rotation, but they are basically taking a preseason approach to regular season games in terms of how they hand out playing time. Totally unfair to Prescott, and a sign of dysfunction on the coaching staff. Dallas really needs to get their act together.
|Derek Carr||OAK||5.400||OAK@MIA 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Looked better last week but I need to see more. Gruden needs to get Carr into a more aggressive mindset. He’s got the skill to be a better downfield passer. Gruden may actually end up being the right coach for him. Carr needs to be pushed.
|Case Keenum||DEN||5.200||DEN@BAL 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Viable but he’s been mediocre and this is a tough matchup.
|Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||5.500||CHI@ARI 09/23/2018 04:25PM ET||None for me, thanks. This is a tougher matchup than the one he struggled in last week. I like Trubisky as a talent, but he’s learning on the job, and Chicago can win this game by staying conservative. I think that’s what they do.
|Josh Allen||BUF||4.500||BUF@MIN 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Dear god, no.
|Sam Bradford||ARI||4.500||CHI@ARI 09/23/2018 04:25PM ET||Nope. No thanks. The Rosen era is not far away.
|Blaine Gabbert||TEN||4.400||TEN@JAX 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||They run a lot of wildcat when he’s in there. Way to have a backup you believe in, Tennessee. And Kaepernick has no job. Pretty amazing when you think about it.
|Marcus Mariota||TEN||4.900||TEN@JAX 09/23/2018 01:00PM ET||Probably too hurt to play.
|Tyrod Taylor||CLE||5.700||NYJ@CLE 09/20/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Needs to run some and if he does, he has some upside.
|Sam Darnold||NYJ||5.100||NYJ@CLE 09/20/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Darnold is going to cost the Jets some games but he’s got the look of a guy who will fill up a stat sheet pretty well on most days.
