Welcome to the Week 4 Quarterback Rankings!
It’s the first of the bye weeks so a few of you may be looking for streamers. I’ll keep grinding these rankings up until my Saturday update, so check back if you are mulling a big decision. Right now, my favorite streamers are Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum.
In daily leagues, I am liking the usual suspects—Mahomes and Big Ben, but both are off the main slate. So I’m on Brees, along with Mayfield, who, I feel, is underpriced by a few measures. My other QB targets for Week 4 include DeShaun Watson, Matt Ryan and Tom Brady. I’ll have a tighter group by the time I record Saturday’s DFS podcast.
I’ll be back later today with the WRs, RBs and TEs.
Bye Teams: Washington and Carolina.
Week 4 Rankings:
|Rank||Name||Team||Salary||Game Info||The Skinny|
|Patrick Mahomes||KC||6.800||KC@DEN 10/01/2018 08:15PM ET||Keep riding the wave. There’s no reason to pull back with all of his top weapons locked in.
|Ben Roethlisberger||PIT||6.000||BAL@PIT 09/30/2018 08:20PM ET||Vegas has this game going over fifty points and more than half of it is expected to come from the Steelers, who carry an implied point total of 27. I also like rolling with Big Ben at home.
|Drew Brees||NO||6.600||NO@NYG 09/30/2018 04:25PM ET||Brees should have a nice day here but I’m not thinking it’s a huge smash spot just because the Giants have solid defensive backs. It has the potential sure, but I think it’s just a good solid Brees day. No Ingram again, so they should be pass-heavy, which obviously helps.
|Aaron Rodgers||GB||6.800||BUF@GB 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s throwing well considering that he’s altered his usual mechanics to compensate for his brace and injury. He should produce here.
|Philip Rivers||LAC||6.500||SF@LAC 09/30/2018 04:25PM ET||He should have a nice day in this plus matchup, but for him to crush it, he’ll need the 49ers to push them with some offense of their own, and that feels unlikely. Look for a B+ performance.
|Tom Brady||NE||6.700||MIA@NE 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||Huge game for a QB who tends to step up in them. Gordon should be involved this time and Gronk’s healthy. The Dolphins will battle Brady pretty well at times, so it’s not a guaranteed smash, but I expect a good performance. I’ll downgrade a few pegs if Gordon is not practicing fully by Friday.
|Matt Ryan||ATL||6.100||CIN@ATL 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s got a more balanced offense now and he should have better throwing angles because of it. I’m liking Ryan right now as long as Julio is ready to go, and it appears that he should be.
|Deshaun Watson||HOU||6.300||HOU@IND 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||He has plenty of potential here—on a team that, at 0-3, can never have a safe enough lead. I’m not worried about whether or not Luck can push them, though he probably can, a little bit. The Texans will pass the ball and use Watson’s legs until they are way out in front—assuming they play well. The only scenario that really concerns me is the Colts stopping the Texans offense, and while they have looked better than expected, I think Hopkins and Fuller will get it done. The expected (but not as of yet confirmed) return of Keke Coutee could also be a big plus as he’s a serious deep threat who will force the defense into some tough choices.
|Baker Mayfield||CLE||5.300||CLE@OAK 09/30/2018 04:05PM ET||I don’t think he’ll be the week’s QB1, but he may end up being the best value because he’s so cheap. With Brees on the road and with Big Ben and Mahomes both off the main slate, Mayfield is a very tempting option in all types of contests—including cash. Stacking with Landry makes tons of sense, and in GPPs, you can add Njoku, Callaway or even Higgins, if you’re feeling saucy. I said this guy was going to kick ass, and I meant it.
|Andy Dalton||CIN||5.400||CIN@ATL 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||Not in love with the matchup. This is a week to avoid him though he is cost-friendly if you feel like taking a shot in a tournament.
|Russell Wilson||SEA||5.600||SEA@ARI 09/30/2018 04:05PM ET||Baldwin returning would help quite a bit. Russ has battled, but it’s too often an uphill climb. He’ll be servicebale here but he’s a longshot to have a huge day. This feels like an ugly divisional game going in.
|Carson Wentz||PHI||5.800||PHI@TEN 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||He needs to have more weapons outside and Alshon will solve that problem sometime soon. If he plays this week, which I doubt, I like Wentz’s chances. I’m thinking he’s a high-end QB2 without him.
|Case Keenum||DEN||5.600||KC@DEN 10/01/2018 08:15PM ET||He’s playable here if you need him. This is a sweet matchup.
|Andrew Luck||IND||5.500||HOU@IND 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||Luck’s still working his way back. While I think the lack of arm strength is a bit overblown, the game film says he’s not pushing the ball downfield as you’d expect him to. I think it will come, but for now we have to view him as a fringe starter.
|Matthew Stafford||DET||5.700||DET@DAL 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||Somewhat tough matchup and Dallas likes to slow the pace of the game. Not a spot I love for Detroit’s passing game.
|Joe Flacco||BAL||5.400||BAL@PIT 09/30/2018 08:20PM ET||He has some potential in this matchup for sure, but I’m not inclined to put many of my chips here. I’ll have some Big Ben stacks that will include John Brown, but that’s about it from the Ravens side. A contrarian stack with Flacco at QB could make some sense, but I’m not feeling it right now.
|Eli Manning||NYG||5.600||NO@NYG 09/30/2018 04:25PM ET||He looked a whole lot better last week but he lost Evan Engram which is too bad, because he’d have seen lots of single coverage in this game. Look for Sterling Shepard to have a big game instead. The Giants have slowed their offensive pace early in the year, but I wonder if they won’t start to speed things up now that they are playing teams with less ferocity in terms of pass rush and also overall defensive strength. This is a new offense that Shurmur has brought and that could explain a slow methodical approach early on.
|Ryan Tannehill||MIA||5.500||MIA@NE 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s playing better than I expected, but this offense is all over the place and tough to predict. No stackable commodities I’d consider in DFF.
|Ryan Fitzpatrick||TB||6.200||TB@CHI 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||The magic is over. Time to cut and run and add Winston in leagues where he’s been dropped. The Bears are not a matchup I want to use Fitz in—even with his great weapons. He’s viable, but not a QB1.
|Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||5.200||TB@CHI 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||He needs plus matchups to be viable right now and I think he has one here. Still not a strong play but a viable one.
|Derek Carr||OAK||5.100||CLE@OAK 09/30/2018 04:05PM ET||Looking a bit better but the offense is still going through a transformation. Say what you want about Gruden, but he’s a big improvement on the coaching level. Hopefully he settles in as a GM and gets better.
|Blake Bortles||JAX||5.200||NYJ@JAX 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||He’ll have a typical Bortles week here. Nothing to get excited about.
|Josh Allen||BUF||5.100||BUF@GB 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||Allen was great last week—playing a weak hand (the Bills’ offense) but with a big lead in the game. He made plays with his feet and his arm forces teams to cover the whole field. If they can keep this kid alive and eventually get him some real NFL talent to work with, he could end up being very good. Sadly, this week’s opponent is less likely to hand him a big lead and he’ll be playing straight up. Not a recipe for big sucess.
|Dak Prescott||DAL||5.300||DET@DAL 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||Nope. No way. I said it all last week. They need to make some hard choices at receiver and gain some consistency. They are killing their QB in the interim.
|Sam Darnold||NYJ||4.500||NYJ@JAX 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||At Jacksonville is no place to even think about starting a rookie quarterback on a mediocre offense.
|Marcus Mariota||TEN||5.000||PHI@TEN 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||Not healthy and only playing because they have no choice.
|C.J. Beathard||SF||4.600||SF@LAC 09/30/2018 04:25PM ET||Dear god no.
|Josh Rosen||ARI||4.500||SEA@ARI 09/30/2018 04:05PM ET||He looked ok last week in a very brief stint, but I am very much in wait-and-see mode. This is a tough spot for a rookie.
|Jameis Winston||TB||5.100||TB@CHI 09/30/2018 01:00PM ET||My guess is that he starts in Week 6—after Tampa’s bye. Then again, he could be starting the second half this week. It’s been that kind of season.
|Jared Goff||LAR||5.700||MIN@LAR 09/27/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED….and boy did I mis-rank him!) I’d rather play a differet option this week, but if you need Goff there’s some hope for success. He won’t be locked into any of my DFS lineups tonight—not because he’s bad, but because there are better options for the money this week.
|Kirk Cousins||MIN||5.300||MIN@LAR 09/27/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED….and boy did I mis-rank him!) Not looking to get cute here. It’s a road game on a short week against a nasty defense. Yes, the Rams are now hurting at corner, but I see plenty of other good places to put my money.
