Welcome to the Week 8 Quarterback Rankings!
Steady yourselves, folks. It’s rough out there. Maybe it’s just me, but we have a week of tough matchups and mediocre to scary game scripts. I tend to research a game and write up the QB Skinnys before I actually rank them. And, if you read through this weeks ranks, you’ll note that even some of the guys who are ranked as QB1s, are not in situations I really like.
It’s that kind of week.
Just remember, that it’s the same for all. It’s a question of finding ways to exploit this field that will lead us to either profit or peril. Hopefully we can find some clarity by the time we’re making our DFS lineups.
The QBs I’m focusing on for DFS are far from locked in. Watson is definitely in play as are Rodgers and Wilson, but I’m not sure if I can go cash with any of them. Perhaps a second deeper dive into the slate will lead me to reconsider this. We’ll get into that this weekend.
I’ll be back in a bit with the receivers, running back and tight ends.
Bye losses: Cowboys & Ravens.
WEEK 8 RANKINGS
|Deshaun Watson||HOU||7.100||OAK@HOU 10/27/2019 04:25PM ET||This sets up pretty well for him. The obvious concern is Oakland’s offense finding a way to function in order to open up the game some. Both of these coaches like to run but both defenses are pass funnels. Oakland needs to be able to throw some or we could have a problem. Not sure that paying up in cash is the move here. I’m more comfy with Watson compared to Russell Wilson, but I’m looking for a cheaper way in cash this week.
|Aaron Rodgers||GB||7.000||GB@KC 10/27/2019 08:20PM ET||If KC can find a way to move the ball on Green Bay’s defense, then Rodgers has a shot at a big day here. The stacking piece in my view will be MVS. Some folks may write off KC—forgetting that Andy Reid can get positive play out of below average QBs. Do the names, Kolb, Feeley or Detmer ring a bell? This game has potential.
|Russell Wilson||SEA||7.200||SEA@ATL 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||The matchup is super sweet but the caveat is that Atlanta must be able to score. That’s a bit of an open question due to Matt Ryan’s health not to mention the sudden loss of Mohamed Sanu, a team leader. This is a potential smash spot for Russ if Atlanta shows up offensively, but Seattle’s running ways could rule most of the day if it’s one-sided. Wilson is a locked in seasonal play but I’m liking him more as a tournament piece in DFS, and a pricey one at that. Not feeling him in cash at this point of my prep. I feel like good game flow here is roughly a 50/50 proposition.
|Matthew Stafford||DET||6.100||NYG@DET 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||No Kerryon to lean on and a great matchup for the pass. Stafford should have a strong outing.
|Jared Goff||LAR||6.800||CIN@LAR 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||He should give you solid stats for a seasonal game but the upside feels capped because this thing feels like a huge blowout—to the point where defensive TDs could be scored early. Too pricey to even consider in cash. If Gurley can handle some workload, he could be the Ram to bet on this week, but a 3-man RBBC has a shot to emerge due to the possible blowout.
|Drew Brees||NO||6.300||ARI@NO 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||See Bridgewater, but I’ll add, if they let Brees play here, they are making a mistake. They get two extra weeks if the rest him and Teddy can win this game. ***UPDATE*** They are going to make the mistake it appears. Brees would seem to be a solid play, but there’s some risk they pull him with a lead.
|Tom Brady||NE||6.600||CLE@NE 10/27/2019 04:25PM ET||The Pats can move the ball in this game with patience and the ground game. Feels like a James White week to me.
|Josh Allen||BUF||6.500||PHI@BUF 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||Huge ceiling but plenty of downside if he holds the ball too long as he tends to do. Philly will hit you frequently and they finish their hits. Very wide range of outcomes on this game, but unless he falls apart completely, Allen usually gets his by day’s end.
|Kyler Murray||ARI||6.200||ARI@NO 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||Tough matchup so this one will be interesting to watch. Getting Christian Kirk back would help a lot.
|Jacoby Brissett||IND||5.600||DEN@IND 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||Brissett has been solid for sure but this one feels run-based and ugly with both teams enjoying slow paced play. His foot-point ability always gives him some added ceiling, so a reasonable seasonal play.
|Jameis Winston||TB||5.900||TB@TEN 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||You never know, but as Hack and I discussed on last week’s WEEI pod, Mike Vrabel’s defense plays well and they do it in an opponent-specify kind of way. It’s in the NE mold and I have major concerns for Jameis Winston in this game (and in general!), who tends to struggle versus defenses that disguise well.
|Matt Moore||KC||4.900||GB@KC 10/27/2019 08:20PM ET||Very playable—maybe even to the point of being a smart start. This offense can turn a ball distributor into a fantasy star.
|Ryan Tannehill||TEN||5.100||TB@TEN 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||He’s playable but this game has more u-g-l-y potential than a re-run of Wildcats. Tannehill should be successful but expect a game with typically limited play totals as both teams like to run clock. And, just to tack on here, Tannehill looked better last week that I’ve seen in some time. He’s got confidence in his feet again and it shows. We’ve been talking about the switch to Tannehill all year and how it will change the Titans’ offense, but I think I underestimated the impact to some degree. He’s unlocked these pass-catchers. And, you know what, we needed that.
|Gardner Minshew II||JAX||5.500||NYJ@JAX 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||He has a shot here but I think some folks could underestimate what the Jets can do defensively in a matchup like this. Minshew could have a huge day here IF he can handle the Jets pressure, because his receivers have the edge against the Jets defensive backs not named Adams. He’s an interesting cheap tourney piece. Not going there in cash.
|Daniel Jones||NYG||5.800||NYG@DET 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||If the Giants really lean on Saquon they can have a good day and throw efficiently behind him. They also need to get him involved as more than a dump off guy in the pass game. Am I going to bet on that happening? Maybe a little bit, but mostly by rostering Saquon himself. Jones is a QB2 for seasonal purposes.
|Carson Wentz||PHI||5.600||PHI@BUF 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||They miss DeSean Jackson’s speed more than I thought they would. Between the drops and Alshon being at less than 100%, this offense has been meh. And, this matchup is rough.
|Sam Darnold||NYJ||5.500||NYJ@JAX 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||I firmly expect Darnold to bounce back, but not necessarily here. Maybe a few baby steps but he’s got a sore foot/toe and he’s not practicing fully yet.
|Baker Mayfield||CLE||5.000||CLE@NE 10/27/2019 04:25PM ET||I have no problem using Mayfield here. He actually has the confidence to attack. In a general sense, you want to be predatory versus the Patriots, not hesitant. It’s your best chance. Unlike Sam Darnold, he’s coming off a bye and has been in the saddle all year. He has enough weapons to get by, even if they take OBJ off the table with extra coverage. Mayfield is suboptimal but playable. Can Kitchens get the right balance with Chubb and the pass game? If he does, I think Cleveland can compete. Doubt they can win, but who cares in this space, right?
|Jimmy Garoppolo||SF||5.700||CAR@SF 10/27/2019 04:05PM ET||Feels like a game where there will be offense but lots of running and lots of clock rolling. Jimmy is playable as a QB2 but a big game would need something outside of the projected norm to occur—like falling behind early by multiple scores. It’s unlikely to happen at home with Kyle Allen running the other team’s offense.
|Mason Rudolph||PIT||5.300||MIA@PIT 10/28/2019 08:15PM ET||Off the main slate but the easy matchup puts Rudolph about as in-play as he’ll ever be for seasonal purposes.
|Philip Rivers||LAC||5.300||LAC@CHI 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||Brutal matchup for an immobile QB but Rivers has ways if getting by, and the “death by a thousand cuts” is a game Rivers plays well. Still, this thing looks super ugly, and I’m mostly passing on it for DFS purposes.
|Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||4.900||LAC@CHI 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||His fantasy stats outpace his on-field worth more than any quarterback since vintage Blake Bortles.
|Matt Schaub||ATL||4.700||SEA@ATL 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||He can’t protect himself against the pass rush so be careful, because Seattle’s rush should be improved.
|Ryan Fitzpatrick||MIA||4.700||MIA@PIT 10/28/2019 08:15PM ET||Hey, you never know. That said, I can guess, and my guess here is that Fitz throws multiple picks.
|Derek Carr||OAK||5.000||OAK@HOU 10/27/2019 04:25PM ET||Maybe some volume-related upside could be sold here, because you cannot really run on Houston. That said, even if you sense some impending volume, who is catching the passes? Oh, and Houston handles tight ends well.
|Andy Dalton||CIN||5.000||CIN@LAR 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||No effing way.
|Kyle Allen||CAR||5.200||CAR@SF 10/27/2019 04:05PM ET||Tough as nails matchup and it’s fair to wonder if they decided to NOT have this game be Cam’s return given the nature of his departure. The only way I see the Panthers offense working here if if they really unleash CMC is the pass game. Not sure they’ll see it the same way.
|Joe Flacco||DEN||4.800||DEN@IND 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||He's been bad relative to recent years Joe Flacco, so very, very bad.
|Patrick Mahomes||KC||6.900||GB@KC 10/27/2019 08:20PM ET||No way they let the franchise play here but the idea that he has even an outside chance i great news for his fantasy supporters.
|Kirk Cousins||MIN||6.700||WAS@MIN 10/24/2019 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Easy matchup but how much do they actually pass? Not feeling the ceiling with Thielen banged up and an opponent who may not score at all.
|Case Keenum||WAS||4.700||WAS@MIN 10/24/2019 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) I’d rather rather clean my teeth with a belt sander.
|Teddy Bridgewater||NO||5.900||ARI@NO 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||He OR BREES will be a smash option this week, so just stay ready to put in the guy who starts. It’s a 1pm game, so you’ll be able to make the right choice.
|Matt Ryan||ATL||6.000||SEA@ATL 10/27/2019 01:00PM ET||It’s a passing matchup so he’s viable if he plays but the ankle is a concern because Ryan is not mobile when fully healthy and he does not have the kind of arm to make pure arm throws, so he needs his plant foot. Some risk here—even if he goes. Stay tuned to this situation if you have Ryan or any of his receivers. ****UPDATE**** He’s OUT
