Welcome to the Week 8 Quarterback Rankings!
I just want to take a quick second to remind folks that these rankings get posted early in my weekly process. I spend Monday and Tuesday largely looking back, as I put the Waiver Wire articles and podcast together. On Wednesday, I start organizing the new week and the lineup rankings that need to go up on Thursday—due to Thursday Night Football. Much of the crucial information on a given week comes in on Friday and Saturday, so I strongly encourage you to consult my final rankings which usually go up Saturday afternoon and evening. The early rankings, while important, are a quick sketch of the week to come. The final rankings are almost always better. That is all.
I really like the quarterbacks this week as far as DFF is concerned. Rodgers ($6,400) at Rams is the play that really sticks out to me so far, just in terms of how I see the potential game flow going. Vegas has that game at 56.5 total points right now, and I think they may be selling the Green Bay side a little short.
In seasonal leagues, you are fine if you can start a top 20 option but things get dicey fast after that point. Once you reach Eli in the rankings, I am uncomfortable.
I’ll be back later on with the WRs, RBs and TEs.
Week 8 Byes: Falcons, Cowboys, Titans, Chargers.
Week 8 Rankings:
|Rank||Name||Team||Salary||Game Info||The Skinny|
|1||Patrick Mahomes||KC||7.000||DEN@KC 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||Denver will present a challenge or two, but the stats will be there at the end of the day—probably in a big way.|
|2||Aaron Rodgers||GB||6.400||GB@LAR 10/28/2018 04:25PM ET||Really like him this week—going up against beatable corners in a game where he can’t take his foot off the gas in almost any scenario. Huge fantasy upside if he plays well.|
|3||Kirk Cousins||MIN||5.900||NO@MIN 10/28/2018 08:20PM ET||It’s a throw-to-win matchup and the saints have nobody to deal with Thielen.|
|4||Tom Brady||NE||6.500||NE@BUF 10/29/2018 08:15PM ET||Not sure how much the Patriots will have to play offense here. Then again, I’m not sure of they have enough healthy running backs to go run heavy in the second half. This game is a colossal mismatch.|
|5||Jameis Winston||TB||6.000||TB@CIN 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||No reason to fade him here. The pass volume will be there and its a great matchup.|
|6||Ben Roethlisberger||PIT||6.100||CLE@PIT 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||I’m not shying away from Ben in good home matchups. He’s a tempting tournament play this week. One of many though.|
|7||Andrew Luck||IND||6.300||IND@OAK 10/28/2018 04:05PM ET||Pretty good spot for Luck. Expect more pass volume.|
|8||Drew Brees||NO||5.600||NO@MIN 10/28/2018 08:20PM ET||Tough road matchup, but the throw volume should be there as running on Minny is a very tall order. ***UPDATE*** Minny has some tough injuries on D with Barr and perhaps Rhodes, so Brees gets a bump.|
|9||Andy Dalton||CIN||6.200||TB@CIN 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s cooled off a bit in recent weeks but this matchup is pretty damn good.|
|10||Jared Goff||LAR||6.000||GB@LAR 10/28/2018 04:25PM ET||Last week’s game was a blowout early and Goff was pulled early for Mannion. The week before, Gurley posted 208 yards on the ground. So the Rams haven’t really needed much from Goff. That should change this week.|
|11||Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||6.100||NYJ@CHI 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||The concern is that the Jets are so beat up that it could be over quickly. Other than that, he’s looking like a strong play. He’s a mediocre QB at the heart of a very strong offense. This thing could be really good if and when Trubisky matures.|
|12||Cam Newton||CAR||5.800||BAL@CAR 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||Very tough matchup, but his feet always make him a viable play.|
|13||Russell Wilson||SEA||5.900||SEA@DET 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||He’s playing well, but his pass volume is so low that he needs to be near perfect to help his fantasy owners. Decent matchup here. He’s playable but a big game seems out of reach unless he runs a lot more than he has this year.|
|14||Carson Wentz||PHI||5.600||PHI@JAX 10/28/2018 09:30AM ET||He’s playable because he has a wide spectrum of weaponry to throw to. That said, matchups don’t get much tougher than this.|
|15||Baker Mayfield||CLE||5.700||CLE@PIT 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||You throw to beat Pittsburgh so that’s a plus factor in this matchup, but Mayfield lacks weapons and that’s not changing by this weekend, especially with Higgins set to miss another game. They should really consider moving Duke Johnson into the slot when they go to three or four receivers. So the young QB has a problem with weak surrounding talent AND a seriously suspect head coach. It’s really too bad. This might be the right time to try and deal for Mayfield in dynasty. Hue should be gone by next season if not sooner.|
|16||Matthew Stafford||DET||5.600||SEA@DET 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||Golden Tate is banged up but this matchup is not a scary one, so fire Stafford up if you need him. I do expect a big dose of Kerryon Johnson so a huge game feels like a reach. Stafford’s seasonal value is less than expected as the Lions have cut down on pass volume. The arrival of Matt Patricia has had fantasy consequences. That’s one thing I got right back in August.|
|17||Joe Flacco||BAL||5.300||BAL@CAR 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||Low ceiling option here unless they find a way to make the big play.|
|18||Case Keenum||DEN||5.100||DEN@KC 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||The matchup is good enough and the game flow could be very favorable for pass volume. He may settle in some now that he has zero competition for his job. He’s obviously capable of posting good stats and has the talent around him to do it.|
|19||Alex Smith||WAS||5.000||WAS@NYG 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||He has no weapons and even less of an inclination to get the ball downfield.|
|20||Eli Manning||NYG||4.900||WAS@NYG 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||Nope. He’s been awful against Washington lately.|
|21||Derek Carr||OAK||5.200||IND@OAK 10/28/2018 04:05PM ET||Man, they keep taking things away from this team. Carr now has no number one anything anywhere. He’s low ceiling for sure. The matchup gives him some deep league viability.|
|22||C.J. Beathard||SF||4.900||SF@ARI 10/28/2018 04:25PM ET||Tough-ish matchup.|
|23||Josh Rosen||ARI||4.800||SF@ARI 10/28/2018 04:25PM ET||It will be interesting to watch their first game under new OC Byron Leftwich, but no way am I playing Rosen.|
|24||Sam Darnold||NYJ||4.500||NYJ@CHI 10/28/2018 01:00PM ET||All of his receivers are banged up so an easy call to avoid him on the road against a tough defense.|
|25||Blake Bortles||JAX||4.700||PHI@JAX 10/28/2018 09:30AM ET||If they are benching him late, that really kills the magic. Bortles isn’t playable to me at this point.|
|26||Derek Anderson||BUF||4.400||NE@BUF 10/29/2018 08:15PM ET||Dear God, no.|
|27||Deshaun Watson||HOU||6.000||MIA@HOU 10/25/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Always viable because of his foot-point potential. It sounds like Fuller is healthy again but he will be without Keke Coutee for a week or so.|
|28||Brock Osweiler||MIA||4.800||MIA@HOU 10/25/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Albert Wilson’s not around to bail him out now. Stills is banged up too. Hard pass.|
