Welcome to the Week 9 Quarterback Rankings!
With six quarterbacks on the bye, it’s a challenging week for streamers. Derek Carr and Case Keenum are probably going to be popular starts for teams who live off the waiver wire. Good luck with that, folks.
In DFS, my focus is near the top of the board right now. Unless something changes, I am probably spending on a QB this week. The one low cost option I’m considering in my main lineups is Ryan Fitzpatrick, but I’m still collecting information and rewatching film. I’ll let you know where I’m at on Saturdays DFF podcast.
These rankings will be updated on Saturday.
The Week 9 bye teams are the Bengals, Giants, Jaguars, Eagles, Colts and Cardinals.
Week 9 Rankings
|Rank||Name||Team||Cost||Game Info||The Skinny|
|Patrick Mahomes||KC||7.100||KC@CLE 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||Good matchup for a QB on a roll. As I talked about this offseason, this offense needed a QB who could open up the whiteboard and that’s what Mahomes brings. I expected some rookie-type struggles, and that’s where I was off base. He’s been outstanding every week. No reason to shy away here. Fire him up in any format or medium—cash or GPP.
|Cam Newton||CAR||6.600||TB@CAR 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||Tampa is one of the best stat matchups in football. Cam should have a big day here and he’s 500 units cheaper than Mahomes. He’s going to be exceedingly popular this weekend in DFS. I know I’ll have him rostered quite a bit.
|Jared Goff||LAR||6.000||LAR@NO 11/04/2018 04:25PM ET||I think he has to throw plenty here and I like his chances. Gurley could be more reception-heavy this week than normal, so the Goff-Gurley stack is intriguing.
|Tom Brady||NE||6.500||GB@NE 11/04/2018 08:20PM ET||They will be in the get-the-ball-out mode early and thats’ fine because Brady will accumulate yardage and probably a score or two. In the second half, I expect they open things up more, but they’ll want to blunt the pass rush a bit before exposing The Franchise to Clay Matthews and company. I see a very good overall day for Brady.
|Aaron Rodgers||GB||6.400||GB@NE 11/04/2018 08:20PM ET||His surrounding talent is getting healthier and he should be fine in this matchup. Belichick’s usual game plan will need some tweaking because Rodgers can hit you in so many ways.
|Drew Brees||NO||6.100||LAR@NO 11/04/2018 04:25PM ET||This is a tough one from a game flow point of view. It makes a lot of sense for the Saints to be run-heavy here as the Rams have been run on a lot more than most folks anticipated going into the season. I see major doses of Kamara and Ingram early on with emphasis on runs, short passes and screens. The Saints need to possess the ball this week or Gurley could wear out their defense. If they can limit the Rams TOP, then their run defense can hold up very well. So the takeaway is that I like Brees this week but I’m seeing good but not great numbers.
|Ryan Fitzpatrick||TB||5.500||TB@CAR 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||I’m not in love with the matchup. Fitz has a weak floor when confronted with a pass rush. He could smash here but could also struggle and they’ve made in-game switches twice this season. All that said, the pass volume they are posting in Tampa is impossible to ignore. He’s a QB1 in most formats this week. Just understand the risks.
|Deshaun Watson||HOU||6.300||HOU@DEN 11/04/2018 04:05PM ET||He’ll be breaking in a new weapon (Demaryius Thomas) and Keke Coutee will be in a touch matchup all day with stud slot corner Chis Harris. So if you’re stacking, it’s probably a good idea to use Hopkins, or, for you narrative driven folks, Demaryius. ***UPDATE*** Coutee is out, which hurts a bit. This tough matchup just got tougher.
|Kirk Cousins||MIN||6.200||DET@MIN 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||Very good matchup but there is some potential for a blowout. The Lions just gave up a very important player in Golden Tate, who would have had the good matchup in this game. I could see their offense struggle here. The Lions D is a sieve against the run, so closing things out could feature Lat Murray as much as the pass. And, if they happen to score early with Mauuray, the pass game stats could be coincidentally low. All that said, Cousins is a good bet in seasonal leagues and a decent play in GPPs, I’d just avoid being heavy on him. ***UPDATE*** Stef Diggs is trending like he’s out. That hurts Cousins and should push the Vikes a bit more towards the run.
|Philip Rivers||LAC||5.600||LAC@SEA 11/04/2018 04:05PM ET||I like him here. His receivers are healthy and Melvin Gordon should be back in the groove barring a setback with his hamstring.
|Russell Wilson||SEA||5.900||LAC@SEA 11/04/2018 04:05PM ET||He’s been tremendous, but how much can we invest in a guy who’s only being allowed to throw about 20 times a game? Seriously, Wilson has attempted 61 passes over the last three games. That’s just brutal. Granted, he’s been remarkably efficient, but something has to give. You’d think that, if your QB was that on fire, that you’d use him more. Call me crazy. Anyway, I’m not betting on Brian Schottenheimer changing his ways. Russ is a solid seasonal option, but not enough volume for me in DFF. You’re just begging for a big old regression bomb.
|Mitchell Trubisky||CHI||5.800||CHI@BUF 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||This one could be over fast. Thusly, pass volume could really fall off as the game progresses. He’s a decent play, but Buffalo is a road apple right now with Peterman at QB. The Bears defense could score multiple times.
|Matt Ryan||ATL||5.700||ATL@WAS 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||Washington, as we’ve seen very clearly in recent weeks, can stuff the heck out of the run. This should keep the ball in the air for most of the afternoon. It’s not a great matchup, but Ryan has weapons and projected volume going for him.
|Baker Mayfield||CLE||5.600||KC@CLE 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||If he had better weapons, I’d be all over him here, but Mayfield not only has shaky skill talent around him, he’s also not getting much time to throw. He’s a decent QB2 due to the matchup and bye heavy player pool, but the ceiling’s limited. New OC Freddie Kitchens says he’ll be putting Mayfield in more spread formations, which is good news.
|Ben Roethlisberger||PIT||5.700||PIT@BAL 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||On the road in his second game versus a tough divisional opponent. I’m a non-fan of all that. Ben’s a decent seasonal start, but I’ll fade him in DFS this week.
|Dak Prescott||DAL||5.100||TEN@DAL 11/05/2018 08:15PM ET||He’s a viable play, but there’s plenty of downside here. Tennessee plays good defense and could do well if the Cowboy’s have a weak game plan as they did early on this year. My guess is that Dak has a solid day but it’s a guess.
|Joe Flacco||BAL||5.300||PIT@BAL 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||With Alex Collins banged up, he may throw it a ton. Hurts a bit that we saw so much of Lamar Jackson last week—and that he was effective.
|Alex Smith||WAS||5.000||ATL@WAS 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||This is actually a pretty solid matchup for the way Washington plays. I could see them extending drives and eating clock all day.
|Matthew Stafford||DET||5.600||DET@MIN 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||Tough road matchup and he lost Golden Tate. They will have some trouble running too, so this could be bad if the Lions don’t play well.
|Case Keenum||DEN||4.900||HOU@DEN 11/04/2018 04:05PM ET||Not a great matchup BUT it could work for the Broncos as Keenum is often at his best when he gets the ball out fast. A quick timing based game-plan could yield passable results. A big game seems like a stretch.
|Brock Osweiler||MIA||4.900||NYJ@MIA 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||He stinks but the Jets are banged up right now so who knows. I’d avoid him unless you have no other options.
|Marcus Mariota||TEN||4.800||TEN@DAL 11/05/2018 08:15PM ET||I think he busts out at some point, but who knows when.
|Sam Darnold||NYJ||4.800||NYJ@MIA 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||He needs healthy weapons and has few.
|Nathan Peterman||BUF||4.000||CHI@BUF 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||Should start for Anderson who was starting for Allen.
|Derek Anderson||BUF||4.300||CHI@BUF 11/04/2018 01:00PM ET||Very, very likely to miss Week 9 with a concussion. ***UPDATE*** OUT
|Derek Carr||OAK||5.400||OAK@SF 11/01/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) The matchup is very good but who is he throwing to?
|C.J. Beathard||SF||5.000||OAK@SF 11/01/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) He’s a GTD with a wrist injury.
|Nick Mullens||SF||4.300||OAK@SF 11/01/2018 08:20PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Will start if CJ Beathard (wrist) can’t go.
