Welcome to the Week 16 Tight End Rankings!
As I said with the QBs and the receivers, congrats to all on making it this far! The tight ends are not particularly problematic this week. There are strong options available and we’ve lost no lock starters in recent weeks. So most of you should have a horse to ride if your team’s still alive.
Nevertheless, for you streamers, I’ve done my best to isolate the plays worthy of consideration. I’ll fine tune tomorrow and also on Sunday if need be.
For DFS purposes, I’m leaning towards spending some cash with both Ertz and Andrews looking enticing at cost. OJ Howard is a GPP option and Hollister gets the flow chart matchup against the Cardinals. There’ a lot to like but nobody I love near the floor or even at 3K.
Good luck to all this week!
On Saturday, I’ll post my Starts article over at WEEI and there will be a podcast for the main slate too, though I’m still trying to figure out when I will have to time to record it. Worst case scenario, it’ll go up early Sunday, but I am aiming for Saturday afternoon if I can swing it.
WEEK 16 RANKINGS
All pricing was sourced from DraftKings.
|Zach Ertz||PHI||6.400||DAL@PHI 12/22/2019 04:25PM ET||He is the number one receiver on the Eagles. His targets are almost a fait accompli. The matchup is a solid one. He’s the nuts play this week at cost on DK and tied with Kittle for best play in seasonal league bowl games.
|Travis Kelce||KC||7.000||KC@CHI 12/22/2019 08:20PM ET||An elite play and arguably the top play but Kittle and Ertz have stronger target floors this week while costing less.
|Darren Waller||OAK||6.100||OAK@LAC 12/22/2019 04:05PM ET||Renfrow’s return could cost him a target or two, but he’s smoking hot.
|Mark Andrews||BAL||5.900||BAL@CLE 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||Liking this matchup for him. You really can’t drop a corner on this guy. He’s too freakish.
|Jared Cook||NO||5.000||NO@TEN 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||Playing well right now and arguably the number two target after MT.
|Austin Hooper||ATL||4.400||JAX@ATL 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||He requires some faith as he’s not done anything good since retuning from injury, but the matchup is good and he just missed a score last week. His snaps returned to his normal level last week so it stands to reason that the next step is the production.
|Hunter Henry||LAC||4.700||OAK@LAC 12/22/2019 04:05PM ET||Good matchup but his role has just disappeared and it’s hard to fathom why aside from a case of hitting the wall. That happens sometimes when you come back fast from a major injury. He’s a TE1, but the recent cold streak aligns with a dip in actual usage. It’s not a fluke. He’s not the elite play we want him to be.
|Dallas Goedert||PHI||4.100||DAL@PHI 12/22/2019 04:25PM ET||He’s been getting plenty of targets but not the kind we really want. His route tree lacks the penetrating routes up the seam that we used to see. He’s still a red zone threat and a good bet for six or more targets.
|Jacob Hollister||SEA||4.200||ARI@SEA 12/22/2019 04:25PM ET||It’s the flow chart matchup and he’s healthy and ready to play. If he gets a typical workload in the 5-7 target area, he can have a big day. If he gets the three targets he got last week, not so much. What you need with Hollister is for Arizona to show up and score some points. If they do, you are in great shape.
|Noah Fant||DEN||3.700||DET@DEN 12/22/2019 04:05PM ET||Fant’s a solid option if you need one, but off the TE1 pace this week. Too much risk of re-injury when you are a tight end with a shoulder problem.
|Mike Gesicki||MIA||3.600||CIN@MIA 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||Should see the same 6-7 targets he has been seeing the last 7 weeks. That makes him a guy with some floor in a plus matchup.
|Jack Doyle||IND||4.500||CAR@IND 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||Viable but there are fewer targets with a healthier Hilton and the Colts pass volume keeps decreasing.
|Jonnu Smith||TEN||3.800||NO@TEN 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||No way to tell if they use him as a downfield weapon on any given week and his plus blocking can often hurt his ability to post receiving stats. That said, his big play explosiveness is real, and he is capable of making a few big plays. The matchup is on the tough side but with Jonnu, it’s more about the usage. He’s worth a play if you need him. The potential is there.
|Kyle Rudolph||MIN||3.900||GB@MIN 12/23/2019 08:15PM ET||Thielen is back so predictable volume is not there for Rudolph but he has been so impressive that he HAS to at least be a factor near the goal line.
|Greg Olsen||CAR||3.900||CAR@IND 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||He should play and start and I’d imagine they will give him the lion’s share of the reps in what could be his last season. If he sits, Ian Thomas is a fringe TE1 play.
|Jason Witten||DAL||4.000||DAL@PHI 12/22/2019 04:25PM ET||He has some TD equity if you need him.
|Jimmy Graham||GB||3.200||GB@MIN 12/23/2019 08:15PM ET||He’s creeping back into the picture and it would not shock me if he scores this week. Hopefully you have a stronger option, but Graham would give you a chance.
|Kaden Smith||NYG||3.200||NYG@WAS 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET||Has some TD potential.
|Tyler Eifert||CIN||3.200||CIN@MIA 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Vance McDonald||PIT||3.100||PIT@NYJ 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|David Njoku||CLE||3.500||BAL@CLE 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Ian Thomas||CAR||3.100||CAR@IND 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Hayden Hurst||BAL||3.100||BAL@CLE 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|C.J. Uzomah||CIN||2.500||CIN@MIA 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Nick Boyle||BAL||2.800||BAL@CLE 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Jesse James||DET||2.500||DET@DEN 12/22/2019 04:05PM ET
|Jesper Horsted||CHI||2.500||KC@CHI 12/22/2019 08:20PM ET
|Blake Jarwin||DAL||2.900||DAL@PHI 12/22/2019 04:25PM ET
|Nick O'Leary||JAX||2.800||JAX@ATL 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Jeremy Sprinkle||WAS||2.600||NYG@WAS 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Irv Smith Jr.||MIN||2.800||GB@MIN 12/23/2019 08:15PM ET
|Daniel Brown||NYJ||2.600||PIT@NYJ 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Jeff Heuerman||DEN||2.500||DET@DEN 12/22/2019 04:05PM ET
|J.P. Holtz||CHI||2.500||KC@CHI 12/22/2019 08:20PM ET
|Josh Hill||NO||3.200||NO@TEN 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Nick Vannett||PIT||2.900||PIT@NYJ 12/22/2019 01:00PM ET
|Dawson Knox||BUF||2.700||BUF@NE 12/21/2019 04:30PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED)
|Ben Watson||NE||2.600||BUF@NE 12/21/2019 04:30PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED)
|O.J. Howard||TB||4.000||HOU@TB 12/21/2019 01:00PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) OJH is this week’s big mystery box tight end. He is clearly back in Arians’ good graces and he has seen good target totals in three straight games. What we have not seen is the big play or the touchdown, God forbid both at the same time. Still, all one needs to do is look at what’s left in Tampa and you’ll quickly realize that the most talented player on-hand, is OJ Howard. His floor appears to be about 4 for 44 but his ceiling is still really high. Breshad Perriman is not the next coming and he caught three scores in this offense last week. It’s doubtful that another defense will let Perriman go off in succession. There are stats to be had here. Godwin and Evans were black holes for targets. This is a new deal. Playing OJ takes some chutzpah, but he’s worth it if you need some ceiling.
|Cameron Brate||TB||3.500||HOU@TB 12/21/2019 01:00PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Viable with so many injured receivers in Tampa.
|Darren Fells||HOU||3.000||HOU@TB 12/21/2019 01:00PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED)
|Jordan Akins||HOU||2.900||HOU@TB 12/21/2019 01:00PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED)
|George Kittle||SF||6.500||LAR@SF 12/21/2019 08:15PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) He’s the number one receiver for the 49ers though they never really let him fully loose. Shanahan hates us.
|Tyler Higbee||LAR||5.000||LAR@SF 12/21/2019 08:15PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Added risk this week wit the return of Gerald Everett. It’s a real thing and if Everett gets his old job back, Higbee will lose targets. Not sure how the Rams will handle this as both players have had big games. If they were more in-the-hunt, I’d say they’d stick with Higbee’s hot streak. Hopefully they will.
|Gerald Everett||LAR||4.000||LAR@SF 12/21/2019 08:15PM ET||(ALREADY PLAYED) Returns but his role may have been usurped by Higbee.
