Mike James, RB, Tampa Bay Bucs
With news of Doug Martin’s shoulder injury, I thought it was a good time to talk about Martin’s backup, Mike James. James filled in for Martin and ran for 45 yards on 14 carries. He also caught 3 balls for 8 yards. If Martin’s injury proves bad enough to cost him time, James is the back to use in his place.
The Bucs play on Thursday in Week 8.
Here's what we had to say about Mike James in this year's rookie rankings....
We like James a whole lot and he will be a very nice handcuff option for Doug Martin owners as long as he can have a solid camp. We think he will. This pick had HC Greg Schiano written all over it. James is big, tough and fundamentally sound. His bulk, aggression and strength will be an excellent compliment to Doug Martin. He can play some fullback too which could definitely increase his fantasy value with Martin healthy. James is a very capable blocker and receiver. This was a very solid draft choice by Tampa. He’s pretty well under the fantasy radar, so he could be a late steal in dynasty leagues. If I own Doug Martin, there is no way I am not targeting Mike James.
Here's our take from out 32 Backfields article from August.....
Doug Martin is the man in the backfield and his handcuff is not clear. My advice is to go with our guy Mike James, who, we feel, is the best talent after Martin by far. He’s a guy you can add late too. The other potential guys are Brian Leonard and Peyton Hillis. Very uninspiring options.
We should know more about Martin’s shoulder by the time free agent bids and waiver claims need to be made. James could be a hot name on this week’s wire.
