Welcome to the Week 1 Quarterback rankings. Matchups are difficult to define at this point as nothing has counted so far. Teams like Minnesota and St. Louis, among others, will be showing us all the real goods this week. There are also a bunch of ugly matchups, so a lot of guys, Cam Newton specifically, as lower than normal this week.

We’ll also get a good look at Robert Griffin, who could move way up next week if he flashes us the old goods. We’ll also see the maiden voyages of rookie E.J. Manuel and Geno Smith. While I expect both to lose their games, I expect Manuel to post netter fantasy numbers,

I’ll be back later today with rankings for the backs, tight ends and receivers. I’ll also have comments for all the players going tonight with more to added before Sunday.

Rank PLAYER TEAM Opponent THE SKINNY
Drew Brees NO ATL It’s going to be a high scoring game and Brees should light it up.
Andrew Luck IND OAK He will light these guys up badly. The dogs may be called off a bit early, but it’ll be a good day.
Matt Ryan ATL @NO It’s hard to imagine Ryan having bad day in this one.
Colin Kaepernick SF GB Plenty of upside here and we doubt Green Bay can handle him.
Tony Romo DAL NYG He may blow the game, but not for your fantasy team.
Matthew Stafford DET MIN He’s a solid play at home with healthy weapons all around him.
Tom Brady NE @BUF The Pats are familiar with the Bills new defense since new Bills DC Mike Pettine was the DC of the Jets the last few years. Brady should do well.
Aaron Rodgers GB @SF They’ve been prepping for Fricso for a long while. Rodgers should be fine and he’s posted solid numbers against them before.
Robert Griffin III WAS PHI He should do well in a plus matchup, but whether we see the real deal RGIII is an unknown. This one will be fun to watch.
Ben Roethlisberger PIT TEN No reason for worry here. A healthy Big Ben should be throwing a lot.
Russell Wilson SEA @CAR Not a great matchup, but Wilson gets points in many ways.
Matt Schaub HOU @SD Schaub is a solid play at San Diego with healthy weapons all-around.
Michael Vick PHI @WSH He could do very well here. The Redskins are nothing special, and Vick’s fresh with fresh legs. He’ll be on the same stage with RGIII. Fireworks are to be expected.
Eli Manning NYG @DAL He’s a good option though there’s some doubt about Victor Cruz’s health. Dallas is breaking in a new defense.
Cam Newton CAR SEA A rare troublesome matchup for Newton, but you might consider benching him if you have the right backup. Play him if you need him. He’s still a viable option.
Sam Bradford STL ARI Just a decent play here versus a tough secondary.
Andy Dalton CIN @CHI Tough matchup on the road against a very good defense.
Carson Palmer ARI @STL An average matchup at best.
Jay Cutler CHI CIN A tough matchup for Cutler and the Bears. You probably have better and Cutler has shot if you need him.
Ryan Tannehill MIA @CLE He should do well, but you should have better options.
Josh Freeman TB @NYJ Freeman has some upside against the Jets, but some risk too. You should have better options.
Alex Smith KC @JAC A good matchup, but I’m not betting on the K.C. passing game just yet.
EJ Manuel BUF NE Should be playing from behind and should throw a lot. He’s roster-able, but not an advisable play in Week 1.
Terrelle Pryor OAK @IND If he’s the starter, he has some upside because he scores with his arm and his feet. Indy’s defense a good mark too.
Brandon Weeden CLE MIA No Gordon this week, but the matchup is less than terrifying.
Philip Rivers SD HOU Tough matchup though at least he’s at home. Rivers has too many red flags on most weeks, including this one.
Christian Ponder MIN @DET He’s going to need to make/extend plays with his legs against a very disruptive Lions front.
Blaine Gabbert JAC KC Not sure how healthy he is and he’s without both Justin Blackmon and Marcedes Lewis. You have a better option, right?
Jake Locker TEN @PIT Tough matchup, but at least he’s playing well.
Geno Smith NYJ TB Hard to imagine him doing very well here for fantasy purposes.
Peyton Manning DEN BAL (Played Thursday) It’s Manning with a ton of healthy weapons. He’ll be fine.
Joe Flacco BAL @DEN (Played Thursday) Banged up Broncos are also without Vonn Miller. Flacco could have a decent night.
