Welcome to the Week 5 Quarterback rankings.  These are the preliminary rankings.  I'll be updating them over the weekend as always.  The early rankings for the running backs, wide receivers and tight ends will be posted before kickoff tonight, so check back for those.

I've been busy today.  Check out my recent blog posts on Johnathan Franklin and the Giants backfield as well as our updated Watch List.  I'll be posting my weekly Starts & Sits at WEEI tomorrow and Jim Hackett and I will be doing our weekly podcast sponsored by Mogegan Sun.  I'll have it all posted here in The Rotobahn, where I index all of our content for easy access.

The bye teams for this week are Washington, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.

1 Peyton Manning DEN @DAL Rolling ... big time.
2 Aaron Rodgers GB DET He should slice them up pretty well.
3 Drew Brees NO @CHI Tough road matchup though the Bears secondary has been shakier than usual.
4 Tony Romo DAL DEN He’s been very consistent so far.
5 Michael Vick PHI @NYG Loving this matchup.
6 Matthew Stafford DET @GB He’s going to have to throw it a ton.
7 Cam Newton CAR @ARI Looked improved heading into his bye. Cam should use his wheels this week. I see a rushing score in his future.
8 Matt Ryan ATL NYJ Not an easy matchup, but he’s a QB1 all the way.
9 Colin Kaepernick SF HOU He’ll get it done because he’s a 2-way threat. They need to run him more and they will.
10 Andrew Luck IND SEA He gets them at home and that helps a ton. He’s a viable starter in 12-teams leagues.
11 Tom Brady NE @CIN If he gets nobody back (Gronk & Amendola) and loses Dobson, that is pretty tough, but assuming Amendola plays, I am keeping him in with the QB1s. This could change when I update the rankings this weekend. The signing of Austin Collie is a potentially troubling sign.
12 Russell Wilson SEA @IND He’s a viable QB1 option but not a lock to go off by any means.
13 Philip Rivers SD @OAK Good matchup and he’s turned the clock back so far.
14 Jay Cutler CHI NO This is a game that will feature a lot of offense. Cutler was shaky last week, but the fantasy numbers were there.
15 Terrelle Pryor OAK SD Plenty of upside here but there’s also risk with his recent concussion.
16 Sam Bradford STL JAC He’s a good play in this matchup though the Rams have been terrible lately.
17 Eli Manning NYG PHI He should get well this week against a bad defense and in a fast-paced game.
18 Andy Dalton CIN NE He’s been “eh” but he’s always got a chance with his weapons.
19 Ryan Tannehill MIA BAL They are letting him throw it a ton, so he’s always an option worth considering. Not a great matchup here.
20 Brian Hoyer CLE BUF He has looked good and he’s had the benefit of playing with Josh Gordon.
21 Joe Flacco BAL @MIA He’s viable, but you can probably do better.
22 Matt Schaub HOU @SF He got it done last week against a tough D, so you have to give him a chance here, but the 49ers are a tough matchup for sure.
23 Alex Smith KC @TEN Not loving the matchup though Smith has been serviceable.
24 Geno Smith NYJ @ATL He’s been good and bad, but they are letting him throw.
26 EJ Manuel BUF @CLE Still getting back to 100% and he’s been mediocre lately.
25 Carson Palmer ARI CAR Has a chance because of his personnel, but he’s been mediocre.
27 Ryan Fitzpatrick TEN KC Bad matchup, but he’ll be the guy for a month or so while Locker heals up.
28 Blaine Gabbert JAC @STL His time has arrived in that he has his weapons around him, but he’s not playable yet ... if he ever will be. He’s a guy to watch this week. Things should start getting better in Jacksonville. The return of Blackmon gives them balance.
