Welcome to the Week 8 QB rankings. As always, the rankings in this column will be updated on Saturday, so check back, especially if you have injury issues. The byes get serious this week and we feel it in terms of quarterback depth. I’ll be back later today with the backs, tight ends and wide receivers.  They'll all be posted before kickoff tonight.

Look for my Starts & Sits column on WEEI tomorrow as well as The Fantasy Football Poscast with Jim Hackett. I will have links in The Rotobahn for both and you can find all of our podcasts on the right side of the home page as well.

Week 8 Byes: Titans, Chargers, Bears, Colts, Texans and Ravens.

Rank PLAYER TEAM Opponent THE SKINNY
Peyton Manning DEN WAS Look for Peyton to get right back in the groove against a vulnerable defense.
Drew Brees NO BUF He should thrive in this game and he should get Lance Moore back too.
Robert Griffin III WAS @DEN It’s a very solid matchup and he looks a lot like his old self these days.
Tony Romo DAL @DET He should be able to slice Detroit up.
Matthew Stafford DET DAL He should do well in a high-scoring game.
Aaron Rodgers GB @MIN He’s always a QB1, but he’s down three major pieces (Cobb, Jones & Finley) this week and you’d think they lean on the run a bit more than normal. No way they need to throw at the end of the game. No way.
Colin Kaepernick SF @JAC He’s running again and that makes him a much safer play plus the matchup is solid.
Tom Brady NE MIA I’m a Brady believer. He was close to a few big plays last week and Miami at home is a far better matchup than the Jets on the road as far as defenses go. I think things start to turn this week and things will get really good once Shane Vereen returns. I like Brady as a player to add if he’s being shopped. He’s a good buy low opportunity and a solid Week 8 start.
Russell Wilson SEA @STL He’s looking good right now and the Rams aren’t scaring anybody.
Andy Dalton CIN NYJ A.J. Green can handle Antonio Cromartie and Dalton has a big advantage with Eifert and Gresham. The Jets get smoked by tight ends on a weekly basis. The key will be the Bengals OL holding up against a very disruptive Jets front. Dalton should make enough plays to be a QB1 on a down week. Just don’t look for a big game. The Jets are formidable.
Michael Vick PHI NYG Lots of upside against a slow defense, but there is the risk of re-injury too. He’s an upside play with substantive risk.
Ben Roethlisberger PIT @OAK He should be solid and he has some big game potential here.
Matt Ryan ATL @ARI He’s playable, but he’s lacking weapons and Arizona is a tough road matchup.
Ryan Tannehill MIA @NE They have turned him into an easy target by telegraphing the pass, but he Patriots present some opportunity as well with major injuries all over the defense. Pats CB Aqib Talib is a big key here. If he sits, Tannehill should have a pretty good day.
Eli Manning NYG @PHI Plenty of upside but impossible to trust.
Carson Palmer ARI ATL This is a week you can use him. His recent vote on confidence from Bruce Arians helps, but the matchup helps more. The Cards can function quite well against a weak pass rush. Palmer’s a reasonable play.
Alex Smith KC CLE Cleveland can play defense. He’s just managing the game here. He’s playable, but he has very little big game potential here.
Terrelle Pryor OAK PIT I like Pryor, but the Raiders match up against him pretty well.
Geno Smith NYJ @CIN This is a big test for Smith. I think the Jets will play conservative for as long as possible.
Thad Lewis BUF @NO He has some upside here.
Chad Henne JAC SF He’ll scratch out some production because he’ll be throwing a lot, but Frisco cuts down the big plays very well.
Christian Ponder MIN GB Who knows, but Freeman played even worse.
Jason Campbell CLE @KC Not a good play in a hostile environment and against a pretty good defense.
Kellen Clemens STL SEA Not even a consideration.
Cam Newton CAR @TB (ALREADY PLAYED ... originally ranked 9th) Tampa can play D, but Cam almost always gets his points. He’s playing pretty well right now.
Mike Glennon TB CAR (ALREADY PLAYED ... originally ranked 24th) This is a crucial matchup for Glennon. If he gets it done here, we’ll start taking him seriously.
