Welcome to the Week 2 Running Back Rankings. I’ll be back in a little bit with the wide receivers and tight ends. All positions should be up well before Thursday Night kickoff.

There are no byes this week so the drama is on the mild side. I’ll keep grinding these ranks over the next few days and try to do my best for all your David Johnson owners. On the plus side, at least there were some decent options on most waiver wires this week and I like our odds of feasting again leading up to Week 3.

The backs are deep and there are a lot of playable options out there.

As I mentioned with the quarterbacks, I’ve been under the weather the last two days and may have to sit out the DFS pod tomorrow. I’ll post one as soon as my voice starts working better. I feel good about Saturday on that front. If I do wake up feeling good, it’ll be tomorrow.

These rankings are based on .5 PPR scoring.

Rank PLAYER TEAM Cost Matchup PPG THE SKINNY
Le'Veon Bell PIT 9800 MIN@PIT 01:00PM ET 7.7 Expect a bounce back at home.
Melvin Gordon LAC 7000 MIA@LAC 04:05PM ET 18.9 He has an edge against a Miami team that didn’t get their feet wet last week due to IRMA. I am liking the Chargers this week.
LeSean McCoy BUF 8600 BUF@CAR 01:00PM ET 23.9 He is the guy and there is nobody behind him at all. Tough matchup, but still a RB1.
Ezekiel Elliott DAL 7800 DAL@DEN 04:25PM ET 22 Tough matchup but Zeke can still grind out RB1 stats.
Kareem Hunt KC 6800 PHI@KC 01:00PM ET 49.6 Looking good and no major comp for touches outside of C West.
Marshawn Lynch OAK 6000 NYJ@OAK 04:05PM ET 10.2 Looked spry last week. I’m having a little non-buyer’s remorse. He will own the Jets for as long as they allow him to play. I’m guessing he’s on ice for much of the second half, but a remarkably safe play if solid production is what you’re after.
Ty Montgomery GB 5800 GB@ATL 08:30PM ET 19.3 Love him in this matchup. Should get plenty of good looks in the passing game and running will be a measure easier compared to last week vs. Seattle.
Jay Ajayi MIA 6400 MIA@LAC 04:05PM ET 0 Knee soreness is a concern right now and that’s a potential red flag with Ajayi’s past knee stuff. He should be good to go this week.
Dalvin Cook MIN 5900 MIN@PIT 01:00PM ET 19.7 Tougher matchup this week but he's the man.
Leonard Fournette JAX 6500 TEN@JAX 01:00PM ET 24.4 Liking him here for sure. He’s healthy and Oakland ran on the Titans.
Devonta Freeman ATL 7300 GB@ATL 08:30PM ET 11.9 Unlike what we saw in Chicago and Carolina, this is a typical NFL platoon. It could change as they try to get their best players involved, but last week, Coleman cut into Freeman’s time. Freeman has a 12 snap lead with 36 to Coleman’s 24. They played one snap together.
Todd Gurley II LAR 6800 WAS@LAR 04:25PM ET 20.6 Solid matchup based on what we saw last week.
DeMarco Murray TEN 6300 TEN@JAX 01:00PM ET 8 Plenty of potential here and he was clearly the guy in Week 1 despite the down performance. He outsnapped Henry 47 to 18.
Mike Gillislee NE 5700 NE@NO 01:00PM ET 22.5 Huge upside, but some risk if the chances at the stripe aren’t there.
Christian McCaffrey CAR 5600 BUF@CAR 01:00PM ET 12.5 Though he looked really good last week and if Can settles down there will be more stats for everybody. He’s a safe play in .5 and full PPR scoring because he looks like he could be their best receiver.
Jordan Howard CHI 5900 CHI@TB 01:00PM ET 15.6 Limited practice with a sore shoulder. Should be fine. Potentially tough road matchup and no Long for the second straight week. Slight downgrade.
C.J. Anderson DEN 4700 DAL@DEN 04:25PM ET 9.8 Would be higher but J Charles looked good last week, so a shared backfield could in the works for now.
Isaiah Crowell CLE 4900 CLE@BAL 01:00PM ET 10.6 He’s the guy with Duke now looking like a full time receiver.
Carlos Hyde SF 4900 SF@SEA 04:25PM ET 13.7 Tough matchup, but he’s viable because he’s is the backfield save for a dash of Matt Breida.
Jacquizz Rodgers TB 4400 CHI@TB 01:00PM ET 0 Should lead the way and get more than half the touches safely.
Tarik Cohen CHI 4100 CHI@TB 01:00PM ET 25.3 Should be heavily involved. They need weapons and he was their best one last week.
Tevin Coleman ATL 5300 GB@ATL 08:30PM ET 9.8 He was in a near time share last week based on touches,
Kerwynn Williams ARI 4800 ARI@IND 01:00PM ET 8.2 I think he’s the guy to own, but Ellington knows the offense and gives them some legit passing down chops. Both backs should play with KW getting the goal line action.
Jonathan Stewart CAR 4400 BUF@CAR 01:00PM ET 16.2 He looked good last week and they are using him with MacCaffrey so his usage could be higher than some expect. Plenty of TD potential in the game.
Alvin Kamara NO 3500 NE@NO 01:00PM ET 7.8 He led the backfield in snaps and tied with Ingram for the touch lead. If that isn’t an attention-getter then I don’t know what is. You never know where this is headed, but in PPR leagues, playing a big role with Drew Brees is gold. He looks like a decent bet to play half the snaps or more this year. Has big upside this week, but Payton’s rotation is still risky bet. I’m being conservative. If I had to play a NO RB this week, it’d be Kamara. All three have big ceilings and trap doors for floors.
Derrick Henry TEN 5500 TEN@JAX 01:00PM ET 2.5 He’s looming. Murray needs to produce.
Ameer Abdullah DET 4100 DET@NYG 08:30PM ET 7.1 Tough matchup.
Paul Perkins NYG 3800 DET@NYG 08:30PM ET 4.5 A better game script should help this week, but only playing 17 snaps is a troubling development.
Bilal Powell NYJ 5000 NYJ@OAK 04:05PM ET 8.9 Was in a near even time share with Forte last week.
Thomas Rawls SEA 4600 SF@SEA 04:25PM ET 0 Risky but should lead the way and it’s a good matchup. Plenty of upside if they really go to him as the lead guy.
James White NE 4000 NE@NO 01:00PM ET 9.8 He could be more active than usual in this one and this is a great matchup for him.
Terrance West BAL 5100 CLE@BAL 01:00PM ET 14 Could have value if they crush as expected. He’d seemingly be the guy to kill the clock and there should be goal line chances.
Mark Ingram NO 4900 NE@NO 01:00PM ET 12.1 Could be big or could be sharing in a three way committee. Very tough to trust.
Adrian Peterson NO 4700 NE@NO 01:00PM ET 1.8 He yelled at his coach. He also looked very good in limited work. This game doesn’t feel like an AP game to me anyway, so I am putting him on my bench in leagues where I can afford to do so.
Javorius Allen BAL 4100 CLE@BAL 01:00PM ET 7.1 He was my sleeper in the backfield all along. Should have a decent role with no Woodhead.
Frank Gore IND 4000 ARI@IND 01:00PM ET 6.2
Matt Forte NYJ 4200 NYJ@OAK 04:05PM ET 6.6
Darren Sproles PHI 3900 PHI@KC 01:00PM ET 9.5
Rob Kelley WAS 3900 WAS@LAR 04:25PM ET 3
Theo Riddick DET 4500 DET@NYG 08:30PM ET 14.6
LeGarrette Blount PHI 4400 PHI@KC 01:00PM ET 11.7 Not liking him here.
Andre Ellington ARI 4000 ARI@IND 01:00PM ET 5.5 Has some deep PPR appeal.
Charcandrick West KC 4000 PHI@KC 01:00PM ET 9.5
DeAndre Washington OAK 4000 NYJ@OAK 04:05PM ET 4.2 Makes a nice sneaky PPR flex play in deep leagues. He could own much of the second half as I expect Oakland to mangle the Jets.
Shane Vereen NYG 4000 DET@NYG 08:30PM ET 14.1
Dwayne Washington DET 3800 DET@NYG 08:30PM ET 2.2 Could get a lot of work if they pull Lynch once the score is 40-0.
C.J. Prosise SEA 3900 SF@SEA 04:25PM ET 1.1
Rex Burkhead NE 3900 NE@NO 01:00PM ET 3.3
Chris Thompson WAS 3800 WAS@LAR 04:25PM ET 15.6
Chris Carson SEA 4100 SF@SEA 04:25PM ET 5.9
Jamaal Charles DEN 4200 DAL@DEN 04:25PM ET 3
Duke Johnson Jr. CLE 3900 CLE@BAL 01:00PM ET 4 He looked ok at times, but it’s disappointing that Cleveland is taking all of his RB snaps away. He’s best used a versatile weapon rather than just a slot. Granted, he did play major snaps—only two fewer than Crowell and three fewer than Corey Coleman. Duke’s a hold right now, but a risky start this week.
Marlon Mack IND 3800 ARI@IND 01:00PM ET 11.5 Looked good last week. Very good in fact save for a bad fumble.
Chris Ivory JAX 3600 TEN@JAX 01:00PM ET 6.3
Jalen Richard OAK 4000 NYJ@OAK 04:05PM ET 3.8
Dion Lewis NE 3400 NE@NO 01:00PM ET 0.9 Has big play appeal this week, but obviously risky.
Eddie Lacy SEA 4200 SF@SEA 04:25PM ET 0.3
Branden Oliver LAC 4000 MIA@LAC 04:05PM ET 1
Jamaal Williams GB 4400 GB@ATL 08:30PM ET 0.9
Latavius Murray MIN 4100 MIN@PIT 01:00PM ET 0.6
Wendell Smallwood PHI 3800 PHI@KC 01:00PM ET 1.9
Robert Turbin IND 4000 ARI@IND 01:00PM ET 1.3

Damien Williams MIA 3800 MIA@LAC 04:05PM ET 0
Samaje Perine WAS 3800 WAS@LAR 04:25PM ET 0 Watching him like a hawk, but no way you can play him right now.
Alfred Morris DAL 4500 DAL@DEN 04:25PM ET 0.1
Charles Sims TB 3900 CHI@TB 01:00PM ET 0
Malcolm Brown LAR 3900 WAS@LAR 04:25PM ET 7.6
