Welcome to the Week 4 running back rankings.  I have done comments for tonight’s players only and will be adding more when I post the final rankings this Saturday. The bye weeks are here so get ready for the weekly scramble until they end in Week 13. Jim Hackett and I will be doing our weekly podcast at WEEI tomorrow. I’ll post links to it here at Rotobahn. For those who don’t know, all of our weekly content is easy to find by going to The Rotobahn, where I index all that we do.

         Bye weeks:

  • Eddie Lacy
  • James Starks
  • Johnathan Franklin
  • DeAngelo Williams
  • Mike Tolbert

Rank PLAYER TEAM Opponent THE SKINNY
Jamaal Charles KC NYG He’s is going to light the G-Men up.
Matt Forte CHI @DET No reason to doubt him here. He’s a 2-way back.
Adrian Peterson MIN PIT Tough run matchup, but he’ll be fine.
LeSean McCoy PHI @DEN Tough matchup, but he’s been electric so far.
Trent Richardson IND @JAC With Bradshaw out, T-Rich should get the ball more than last week and it’s a far better matchup.
Doug Martin TB ARI He’s actually running very well and he’s got his two guards back. Martin is going to be just fine and post good numbers in Week 4.
Alfred Morris WAS @OAK He’s going to do well in a plus matchup.
DeMarco Murray DAL @SD He really looked good last week and he hasn’t put out a stinker yet, so roll with him.
Darren McFadden OAK WAS He has plenty of upside here.
Marshawn Lynch SEA @HOU He’s almost matchup-proof.
Arian Foster HOU SEA Very tough assignment. Temper expectations.
Chris Johnson TEN NYJ He can make plays against the Jets. This is a matchup of two very good interior lines. The Jets’ DL and the Titans OL.
Giovani Bernard CIN @CLE Tough matchup, but Gio has been ok in tough matchups so far.
C.J. Spiller BUF BAL Tough matchup, but don’t worry about the leg.
Maurice Jones-Drew JAC IND Decent matchup, but he’s done very little and not just because he gets meager support.
Reggie Bush DET CHI Bad matchup and he is less than 100%.
Bilal Powell NYJ @TEN Not an easy matchup, but he may get a big percentage of the snaps with Ivory ... wait for it ... injured.
David Wilson NYG @KC I’m sticking with this kid. It’s underreported, but he actually looked very good last week. The Giants need to use him more. I think they realize this. It’s not a great matchup, or I’d push him higher.
Darren Sproles NO MIA Like a lot of the Saints’ skill guys, Sproles is struggling a bit, but that could change fast. He’s still a RB2.
Lamar Miller MIA @NO He could be a RB1 if they’d just use him more, but the plan is leading wins so far, so don’t look for major changes. He’s a strong flex or a light RB2.
Ray Rice BAL @BUF He will probably play, but I assume they will limit his snaps and use Pierce more than normal.
Knowshon Moreno DEN PHI They are using him as the lead back, but not over-using him, which is smart, but bad for us fantasy geeks. He’s s strong flex or a light RB2.
Stevan Ridley NE @ATL He’s been fading though I am not sure why. NE would be wise to get this guy rolling again. We’ll see.
Le'Veon Bell PIT @MIN Hard to tell what he is and how healthy he is. Serious upside if he can play at his normal level. We’ll be watching this one closely.
Pierre Thomas NO MIA He’s always involved though I like him more in PPR. With Mark Ingram out, he could be a sneaky start this week. He makes a very nice flex option.
Joique Bell DET CHI He leaps up if Bush sits, which is unlikely. Call him a decent flex option this week.
Bernard Pierce BAL @BUF Should get plenty of snaps and is a very solid RB2 if Rice sits, but it sounds like Rice will play.
Jason Snelling ATL NE He’s going to play plenty, but this is a tough matchup.
Rashard Mendenhall ARI @TB Tough matchup for a banged up back.
Fred Jackson BUF BAL With Mark Ingram out, he could be a sneaky start this week. He makes a very nice flex option.
Jacquizz Rodgers ATL NE More of a PPR option to me. He just doesn’t break enough tackles.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis CIN @CLE He’s found the zone in 2 out of 3 weeks, so he has some value.
Willis McGahee CLE CIN Could see more touches though this is a tough matchup.
Brandon Bolden NE @ATL Nice upside if he plays, which I think he will, but the last start makes him a risky play unless you have other options you can go to.
Danny Woodhead SD DAL More of a PPR guy, but he’s been consistently involved.
Andre Ellington ARI @TB Tough matchup, but Ellington is a guy we like.
Daniel Thomas MIA @NO He’s earned his role though we think it should be a shade smaller.
Ryan Mathews SD DAL Just not getting the love with Brown and Woodhead also heavily involved. He’s a flex.
Michael Bush CHI @DET Should see some goal line action this week.
Roy Helu WAS @OAK He is looking very good when he’s in there.
Ronnie Hillman DEN PHI A risky flex.
Chris Ogbonnaya CLE CIN He’s underrated but this is a tough matchup.
Ben Tate HOU SEA Bad matchup.
Montee Ball DEN PHI Still gets goal line looks. A player to watch but a weak flex.
Jackie Battle TEN NYJ Could easily score if you are desperate for a flex option in a large format.
Ronnie Brown SD DAL
Alfonso Smith ARI @TB
Da'Rel Scott NYG @KC
Marcel Reece OAK WAS
Christine Michael SEA @HOU A guy to watch. He finally carried the ball last week and looked pretty good.
Knile Davis KC NYG
Lance Dunbar DAL @SD
Jonathan Dwyer PIT @MIN
Donald Brown IND @JAC Could see the ball some with Bradshaw out and the matchup is a plus.
Alex Green NYJ @TEN
Robert Turbin SEA @HOU
Bryce Brown PHI @DEN
Bobby Rainey CLE CIN
Felix Jones PIT @MIN
LeGarrette Blount NE @ATL
Brandon Jacobs NYG @KC
Justin Forsett JAC IND
Rashad Jennings OAK WAS
Jordan Todman JAC IND
Toby Gerhart MIN PIT
Theo Riddick DET CHI
Isaac Redman PIT @MIN
Ahmad Bradshaw IND @JAC He’s out with a neck injury.
Mark Ingram NO MIA Unlikely to play (toe)
Frank Gore SF @STL (Already played ... originally ranked 10th) Something tells me he gets more than 11 carries this week.
Daryl Richardson STL SF (Already played ... originally ranked 25th) Should be the primary back tonight with Pead out.
Kendall Hunter SF @STL (Already played ... originally ranked 52nd) He’s a light flex option.
LaMichael James SF @STL (Already played ... originally ranked 66th) He may play, but not worth a start.
Isaiah Pead STL SF (Already played ... originally ranked 73rd)Pead will not play tonight. No word yet as to why.
