Welcome to the Week 8 Running Back Rankings. As always, the rankings in this column will be updated on Saturday, so check back, especially if you have injury issues. The byes, as I have been saying, are kicking in and they hit the backs particularly hard with Matt Forte, Arian Foster, Ray Rice, Trent Richardson, Danny Woodhead and Chris Johnson all out plus a few others. Then you have C.J. Spiller, who may sit after being allowed to play hurt the last few weeks.  These rankings are definitely a work-in-progress. I’ll have a better feel for a lot of these situations after Friday’s practices.

Look for my Starts & Sits column on WEEI tomorrow as well as my podcast with Jim Hackett. I will have links in The Rotobahn for both and you can find all of our podcasts on the right side of the home page.

Week 8 Byes: Titans, Chargers, Bears, Colts, Texans and Ravens.

If you are looking for the QBs, WRs or TEs....

Rank PLAYER TEAM Opponent THE SKINNY
LeSean McCoy PHI NYG Good matchup and he’s rolling.
Jamaal Charles KC CLE He’ll get them one way or another.
Adrian Peterson MIN GB Tough matchup, but he’s AP. He can handle it.
Knowshon Moreno DEN WAS He should do very well again in a sweet matchup.
Eddie Lacy GB @MIN He should have a nice day.
Frank Gore SF @JAC No reason to doubt him after what they did last week.
Marshawn Lynch SEA @STL Should be typical Marshawn.
Reggie Bush DET DAL No way are you sitting him. He missed Friday’s practice but all signs point to him playing on Sunday. Reggie could have a monster day.
Le'Veon Bell PIT @OAK He could really bust out here.
Giovani Bernard CIN NYJ The Jets can struggle against quicker backs, especially in the passing game. Gio is a RB1 on a weak week.
Stevan Ridley NE MIA He’s a good start this week.
Alfred Morris WAS @DEN Tough matchup and Helu is stealing scores.
Fred Jackson BUF @NO He sounds like he’s ready to go and all signs point to Spiller sitting out Week 8. F-Jax is a great play.
Darren Sproles NO BUF Good matchup and he may get extra targets with Jimmy Graham banged up. Sproles could be the key outlet against the Bills’ solid pass rush.
Maurice Jones-Drew JAC SF He should scratch out some value, but a big game is almost out of the question.
Darren McFadden OAK PIT He produced albeit modestly in a tough Week 7 matchup. I give him a chance to do a little better this week. They need to use him as a receiver and I think they will.
Andre Ellington ARI ATL He could be a nice play this week with Mendenhall (toe) banged up. It’s a solid matchup, but the Cards are being very coy in terms of how they plan to use Ellington. Look for his season high in touches, but not a full boat. It sounds as if they will still divide the backfield--giving touches to Stepfan Taylor and perhaps even Ryan Williams if they choose to have him active. They’ll have Alfonso Smith in the usual 3rd down role. Of course, there’s the possibility that they end up letting Ellington go and he could have a big day if they decide to do that. This will be a backfield to watch this week.
DeMarco Murray DAL @DET He should play this week and he’ll be a solid RB2 if he starts. At this point, we expect him to play, but have a backup plan just in case. They’ll probably limit his touches a bit. Don’t expect the usual workload.
Chris Ivory NYJ @CIN Very tough matchup, but they seem intent on getting him the ball. We’ll see if Ivory can hold up.
Zac Stacy STL SEA Brutal matchup. He’s going to get the ball, but the defense will key on him with Kellen Clemens at QB.
Roy Helu WAS @DEN He’s been playing great ball and playing significant snaps.
Joique Bell DET DAL He’s getting healthier and he makes a decent flex play this week.
Pierre Thomas NO BUF He’ll have a role an Mark Ingram is still hurt.
Peyton Hillis NYG @PHI Not as good a matchup as last week, but he may get the pill all day.
Lamar Miller MIA @NE Impossible to tell what they are doing in Miami. Miller has weekly upside but plenty of risk.
Jacquizz Rodgers ATL @ARI He should get enough touches to be a flex option in larger formats.
Steven Jackson ATL @ARI He could be a decent play if he is healthy. He’ll probably split time with Rodgers and it’s not a great matchup. He’s listed as probable.
Rashard Mendenhall ARI ATL This is one of his better matchups all year, but check his status. He hasn’t practiced this week as of Thursday.
Willis McGahee CLE @KC Tough matchup and he’s been mediocre.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis CIN NYJ Tough matchup and his role is shaky if not shrinking. The Jets stuff mediocre runners.
Kendall Hunter SF @JAC He’ll get some touches this week for sure.
Daniel Thomas MIA @NE This might be a week to give him a try. NE is weak up the middle.
Joseph Randle DAL @DET His value is totally dependent on DeMarco Murray’s availability.
Brandon Bolden NE MIA He’ll be a solid flex play in deep leagues.
Bilal Powell NYJ @CIN He’s a flex option with Ivory healthy.
Michael Cox NYG @PHI He could play a bigger role this week.
Chris Ogbonnaya CLE @KC Tough matchup.
Bryce Brown PHI NYG
Tashard Choice BUF @NO
Montee Ball DEN WAS Should see more touches this week, but that’s spec at this point.
Khiry Robinson NO BUF He’s the Saints back that intrigues me at this point, but he’s caught up in the usual logjam in the Big easy backfield. Khiry’s got a bright 2014.
Johnathan Franklin GB @MIN
Robert Turbin SEA @STL
LeGarrette Blount NE MIA
Daryl Richardson STL SEA
Phillip Tanner DAL @DET
Lance Dunbar DAL @DET It like he’ll be a go and he’ll get some touches if DeMarco Murray sits again. He could even be a reach play in larger formats.
Alfonso Smith ARI ATL Smith will most likely play his usual role on 3rd downs and could get a few extra touches assuming Mendenhall sits.
Stepfan Taylor ARI ATL Taylor could get a few touches here as Mendenhall should sit and that leaves some touches on the table.
Rashad Jennings OAK PIT
Justin Forsett JAC SF
Knile Davis KC CLE
Toby Gerhart MIN GB
Brandon Jacobs NYG @PHI Will probably sit again.
Marcel Reece OAK PIT
LaMichael James SF @JAC
Felix Jones PIT @OAK
James Starks GB @MIN He should play this week. We’ll see how they use him.
Jonathan Dwyer PIT @OAK
Fozzy Whittaker CLE @KC
Mark Ingram NO BUF He could return this week but no way can you count on any production.
Anthony Dixon SF @JAC
Ronnie Hillman DEN WAS It sounds as if they are banishing him for a game (and perhaps more) because of his fumbling woes.
Ryan Williams ARI ATL He could be active for the first time all year and who know how effective he might be. He’s a total wildcard.
Chris Polk PHI NYG
C.J. Spiller BUF @NO A very good chance that he sits according to reports. He’ll be a good flex option if he is healthy enough to play. Doesn’t look to good right now. He’s listed as doubtful.
C.J Anderson DEN WAS He’s mostly likely going to be active for the first time all year. Anderson is an intriguing talent for the long term with a nice build for a tailback. He’s a player to watch in long term formats.
Jason Snelling ATL @ARI He hasn’t practiced all week and will not play.
DeAngelo Williams CAR @TB (ALREADY PLAYED ... originally ranked 22nd) Not a good matchup.
Mike Tolbert CAR @TB (ALREADY PLAYED ... originally ranked 38th) He could score again and he’ll get some touches.
Mike James TB CAR (ALREADY PLAYED ... originally ranked 16th) He’ll get some yards and he should catch a few balls too, but this is a tough matchup.
Brian Leonard TB CAR (ALREADY PLAYED ... originally ranked 54th) He’ll be a factor now.
