Welcome to the Week 5 Tight End Rankings.  These are the preliminary rankings.  I'll be updating them over the weekend as always.  The early rankings for the running backs and wide receivers will be posted before kickoff tonight, so check back for those.

I've been busy today.  Check out my recent blog posts on Johnathan Franklin, the Dolphins backfield and the Giants backfield as well as our updated Watch List.  I'll be posting my weekly Starts & Sits at WEEI tomorrow and Jim Hackett and I will be doing our weekly podcast sponsored by Mogegan Sun.  I'll have it all posted here in The Rotobahn, where I index all of our content for easy access.

The bye teams for this week are Washington, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.

Rank PLAYER TEAM Opponent THE SKINNY
Jimmy Graham NO @CHI Locked in.
Tony Gonzalez ATL NYJ He’s rolling and the Jets give up plays to tight ends.
Antonio Gates SD @OAK Looks great right now.
Julius Thomas DEN @DAL Gates demolished Dallas last week, so Thomas is looking good.
Martellus Bennett CHI NO He is playing very well right now.
Jared Cook STL JAC Great matchup.
Jason Witten DAL DEN Dallas will be in throwing mode for most of the day.
Greg Olsen CAR @ARI Solid matchup. You throw away from their corners if you can.
Vernon Davis SF HOU The hamstring is still a concern, but he played well enough last week to stick with him. Check his status on Sunday.
Jermichael Finley GB DET Looks like he’ll return this week (concussion) though he may have his hands full helping out against a nasty front four.
Owen Daniels HOU @SF Tough matchup, but he got it done against Seattle last week.
Brandon Pettigrew DET @GB Came alive last week and this is a good matchup.
Brent Celek PHI @NYG He’s a viable play but a bit off and on. The matchup is solid this week. The Giants are soft.
Charles Clay MIA BAL He’s been heavily involved since Keller went down.
Jermaine Gresham CIN NE He’s been involved every week.
Coby Fleener IND SEA We do see some seams in the Seattle defense, but this does not shape up as one of Fleener’s better games.
Brandon Myers NYG PHI Good matchup for a guy who needs one.
Dallas Clark BAL @MIA Not a bad reach play as he’s been active and Miami has been torched by tight ends
Rob Housler ARI CAR He’s coming on now. He’s a viable play if you need a guy.
Sean McGrath KC @TEN He was a bit of a revelation last week and you could do worse if you are looking for a plug-n-play option.
Delanie Walker TEN KC He’s been involved.
Tyler Eifert CIN NE A guy to watch, but a risky start this week.
Kellen Winslow NYJ @ATL He’s playable if you need him, but far from a strong option.
Jeff Cumberland NYJ @ATL He’ll get some extra looks this week with so many injuries to the Jets’ receivers.
Garrett Graham HOU @SF Coming off a big week but it’s a poor matchup.
Mychal Rivera OAK SD He’s the guy for the Raiders now, but you can’t count on him for much.
Zach Ertz PHI @NYG Still a guy to watch in Chip Kelly’s system.
Joseph Fauria DET @GB He’s a TD threat.
Clay Harbor JAC @STL He’ll start for now with Lewis out.
Benjamin Watson NO @CHI Still a good player and he found the zone last week, but his role is small.
Luke Willson SEA @IND Talented and could do some things this week with Miller dinged up.
Lance Kendricks STL JAC He’s the 6th wheel in the offense.
Vance McDonald SF HOU Not getting enough looks yet.
Ed Dickson BAL @MIA Playing very poorly so far and was called out by coach Harbaugh. Still a guy to keep an eye on because he has talent and a good QB.
Tony Scheffler DET @GB Could make a big play, but don’t bet on it.
Anthony Fasano KC @TEN Not a good option if he does play. He’s questionable with a knee. If he sits, then McGrath becomes an option again.
Zach Miller SEA @IND Nursing a hammy and may not play.
Zach Sudfeld NYJ @ATL He’s a Jet now and still unplayable in fantasy.
Rob Gronkowski NE @CIN Very unlikely to play and with the late start, you’d be silly to wait and see. Week 6 appears to be the target date.
Jordan Cameron CLE BUF (Already played ... originally ranked 2nd) Going off every week so far.
Scott Chandler BUF @CLE (Already played ... originally ranked 21st) He can always score. He’s great in the red zone if they can get there.
